Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO O. BUTTERWEOK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY PISTOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,124, dated October 10, 1876; application filed July 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTo O. BUTTERWECK, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Toy Pistol; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved toy pistol. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
This invention relates to a toy pistol for shooting marbles and other small articles, and is intended to be an improvement upon the patent granted to myself February 29, 187 6, No. 174,192.
The invention consists of a pistol, in which a marble or other small projectile is impelled from the barrel by means of a concave-faced piston, around the rod of which is coiled a spiral spring. The piston-rod is drawn back by means of a button or loop on its .rear end, and is held in that position by a projection on the trigger, which catches against the front surface of the piston, the spiral spring being compressed between the piston and the inner surface of the rear end of the pistol.
The barrel and one side of the stock are made in one piece, and the piston when drawn back, by means of the button or loop on the rear end of its rod, passes outof the barrelinto the stock, which is hollowed to contain the necessary internal parts of the device. The
Fig.
detachable side of the stock is secured by screws or otherwise to the other part, the whole device being made of brass or other suitable material.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the stock of a toy pistol, of which B is the barrel, and O the concave-faced piston. The piston-rod c is surrounded by the spiral spring D, which is compressed between the inner surface of the rear end of the barrel and the piston 0 when the rod 0 is drawn back, and the projection e of the trigger E is caught against the front surface of the piston. To insure the projection catching against the piston, the trigger is backed by a spring, F, which forces it up, though it cannot entirely enter the barrel, because of the projection e on its lower edge. 0n the side of the pistol-barrel B is a slot and spring-catch, G, to hold the marble or other projectile within the barrel when the pistol is pointed or inclined downward, the concavity on the face of the piston allowing it to sit closely to the latter.
The stock A and barrel B are so constructed and arranged that the hollow of the former communicates directly with the latter, thus allowing the spiral spring D to be coiled in the stock directly in line with the barrel, when the piston is pulled back and caught by the projection e on the trigger.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the toy pistol herein described, the combination, with the barrel B, hollow stock A, concave-faced piston O, and piston-rod c, of the trigger E, triggerspring F, and lateral spring-catch G, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
O. C. BUTTERWEGK.
