IMPROVEMENT IN TOY GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 154,810, dated September 8, 1874; application filed May 19, 1873.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH SMITH, of Battle Creek, county of Oalhoun, State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Toy Gun, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to produce an improved toy gun by means of a propellingbar, spring, and stock, ashereinafter described.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the gun, the internal arrangements being shown by the dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a face view of the propelling-bar.
In Fig. 1, A is the stock, the form of which may be varied according to size. Through the shank of the stock a mortise is formed to admit the lower portion of the propelling-bar B, and said mortise is sufficiently extended from the breech of the barrel toward the lower end of the stock to allow the bar B proper motion in operating the gun. This bar turns on the pin i. To its lower extremity is attached one end of the spring 0, the other end resting in a recess formed for its reception under the barrel. Through the barrel the hole 0 is bored, and in the top of the propelling-bar B, which fits up against and closes the lower end of the barrel, a recess or chamber, 9, is formed against the hole 0 of the barrel. This chamber should be made a trifle smaller than the bore of the barrel, so that whatever missile can be placed in the chamber y will pass freely through the barrel.
To operate the gun the top of the bar B is drawn down in the direction of the dotted line 11.. This compresses the spring attached to itslower extremity. The trigger-catch 11 then engages at f with a stay left in the mortise, or a cross-bar which may be inserted for the purpose, and thus holds the bar in position for receiving the missile. The missile is placed in the chamber 9, and when the bar B is set free by disengaging the trigger from the stay f, the spring 0 causes it to fly suddenly back into its first position, and themissile is thrown violently from the chamber g into the barrel, and through that is discharged from the gun. The spring to operate the bar B may be a steel, leaf, or how spring, or a coiled spring. It may be placed behind the bar instead of in front, or it may be an elastic cord or cords attached in various ways. But any of these would plainly be the. equivalent of the spiral spring shown in the drawing. The trigger may be made of wire, if preferred.
By this device a breech-loading toy gun is produced. The spring is enabled to exert an increased projectile motion by means of the bar B, the bar acting as a lever, receiving the impulse on its shorter arm, and throwing the projectile with increased motion from its longer arm. The missile retains its position as well when the gun is pointed down as when it is held in a level position or pointed up, and the person who is learning how to shoot may sight his object directly through the barrel.
I claim as my invention- The propelling bar 13, with the triggercatch 01 pivoted thereto, in combination with the spring 0 and the stock A, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
