Wjs. REED.
TQY GUN.
No. 283,661. Patented Aug. 21, 1883.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ \VILLIAM S. REED, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOYGUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 283,661, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed May1 2,18S3. (No model.) 7
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S. REED, of Leominster, in the county of XVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain improvements in Toy Guns or Cannons, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of two cannons facing each other, one of them being provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a cannon the target of which is being aimed at by a ball attached to an elastic cord and held in the hand of a toy soldier. Fig. 0 represents the target of a cannon about to be struck by the ball of a pistol. Fig. 4 represents the target about to be struck by a ball thrown by hand and without an elastic connection. Figs. 5,6, and 7 represent the retaining device.
My present invention consists in a toy gun or cannon having a springplunger and a retaining device, which is adapted to'be rotated in such manner as to allow of the release of the plunger which discharges the ball or other Ell S- sile contained therein.
. To enable othersskilled in the art to understand and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In Fig. 1 of said drawings, A B represent two mounted cannons facing each other. The
cannon A is provided with a long plunger, a, passing centrally into it from the rear, the head of the plunger being secured to the cannon by an elastic band, I).
Communicating with the bore of the cannon A is a vertical passage, 0, for the reception of the shank d of a retaining device, 0, having a horizontal arm, 6, with an enlarge ment which serves as a target, h, at its outer end. The bottom of the shank d is provided with two beveled faces, 8 and 9, Figs. 5, 6, and -7. When the plunger a is drawn out to the rear of the cannon, its forward end abuts against the beveled face 8, which holds it in this position against the resistance a of the spring-band b, the horizontal arm (2, with its target, being located at right angles to the bore of the cannon. When the target of the gun A is struck by a ball discharged from the gun B or other object, the retaining device 0 is in the hand of a person, the ball being secured to an elastic cord attached to the cannon-carriage, (see Fig. 2); or the target may be struck by a ball discharged from a pistol, Fig. 3, or by a ball thrown byhand without the elastic cord, Fi 4..
The targetof the retaining device may be dispensed with, and its horizontal arm 9 have a cord, i, attached thereto, Fig. 7, which may be pulled in order to rotate the retaining de vice and release the plunger 0.
The bottom of the retaining-pin may be prov'ided with but one inclined face, or it may be cam shape, if desired.
1. A'toy gun or cannon provided with a spring-plunger, a, and a retaining device, G, passing down into the bore, and having its foot inclined or cam shape, constructed to operate as described.
2. A toy gun or cannon, with its spring plunger a, and a retaining device, 0, having its bottom inclined or cam shape, and with a horizontal arm, e, provided with a target, 71, which, when struck or acted on, liberates the plunger, which discharges a ball, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination, the toy guns A 13, each having a springplunger, a, and a retaining device, 0, extending into the bore in front of the plunger, and provided on its outside with a vertically-pivoted target, 71, which, when struck or acted on, will swing around from a position at right angles to the bore into a position in the same line or plane therewith, to release the plunger within, whereby the discharge of a ball or missile from one gun shall strike the target and cause the discharge of the other gun, as specified.
Witness my hand this 28th day of April, 1883.
WILLIAM S. REED. In presence oi' N. W. STEARNS, G. E. DRESSER.
