Description

HOMER CROSBY MURRAY, OF GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI MECHANICAL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed July 23,1906. Serial No. 327,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER CRosBY MUR- RAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gulfport, in the county of Harrison and. State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Mechanical Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a mechanical toy adapted to be pushed over a surface and wherein as the toy is moved backward and forward the head of the object carried by the toy will be automatically turned from side to side.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct a toy of the character described that it will be simple, durable, and, economic and attractive to children.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved toy and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof, the section being taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The body of the toy consists of a bar or rod A of desired length, circular in cross-section throughout the major portion of its length, and which is provided at one end with a handle and at the other end with a longitudinal enlargement 11, in which enlarged portion 11 of the body-rod a longitudinal recess 1 1 is made at one side.
A wheel 12 of desired diameter is mounted, through the medium of a suitable spindle 13, upon the recessed portion 11" of the bodybar A, and said body-bar is adapted to carry a fixed object B, which may be of any desired character. As shown, the object B repre sents a running horse, the fore feet 14 whereof are secured to the enlargement 11. of the bodybar, while the hind feet 14L are secured to a block 15, fixed to the body-bar A in any suitable or approved manner. A rider 16 is shown mounted on the representation of the horse, and the arms 17 and legs 18 of the rider are preferably pivotally connected with the trunk' of said rider.
A vertical opening 19 ismade in the body of the horse or mount B, and a corresponding opening 20 is made longitudinally in the trunk .is preferably secured to said mount.
of the representation of the rider, which rider A spindle 21 is carried loosely up through the open ing 19 in the representation of the horse and through the opening 20 in the representation of the rider, and the head 22 of said rider is either integral with or is attached to the upper end of the said spindle 21, so that as said. spindle 21 is turned to the right or to the left the representation of the head of the rider will be turned correspondingly. I
The spindle 21 is prevented from being drawn out from its seat by a pin 23 or projection passed through the lower portion of the spindle 21, which lower portion of the spindle extends below the trunk of the object B. A screw-eye 24 or like device is secured to the lower end of the spindle 21 and a cable or chain 25 or other flexible material is secured to the eye 24 and to an eye 27 or its equivalent located at one side of a block or slide 26, mounted to move freely on the body-bar A in front of the enlarged section 11 thereof, and this slide 26 is connected,by means of a pitman 28, with the wheel 12. Thus in operation as the wheel 1.2 is rolled over the ground or other support backward or forward a rocking motion in a rotary direction is given to the spindle 21, causing the head of the object with which the spindle-is connected to move from side to side.
This toy is very simple, it is durable, and it is economic-and can be made very pleasing to children.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a mechanical toy, comprising a body-section, a wheel mounted to turn thereon, an object mounted on the body-section, a member of which object is movable, a spindle connected with the movable portion of said object, a slide mounted on the body, a flexible connection between the spindle and the slide, and a pitman connection between the slide and the wheel.
2. In a mechanical toy, a body-bar, a wheel mounted at one end of the body-bar, an object fixed on the said body-bar, having a rotatable member, a spindle secured to the rotatable member, extending through the fixed portion of said object, a slide mounted on the body-bar, and a flexible connection between the lower portion of the saidspindle and an outer side portion of the slide and a pitman connection between the slide and the said wheel.
3. In a mechanical toy, a body-bar circular in cross-section throughout the major portion of its length, which body-bar is provided with a handle at one end and a longitudinal enlargement at the opposite end having a longitudmal recess in one of its sides, a Wheel mounted to turn at the recessed portion of the body-bar, an object fixedly secured to said body-bar, a second object mounted onthe fixed object and provided with a rotatable head member, a spindle secured to the said head member of said mounted object, extending down through the mounted object and the fixed object, the spindle being free to turn in both of said objects, a slide mounted for longitudinal movement on the circular portion of the body-b ar, a flexible connection between the lower end of the spindle and the side portion of the slide, and a pitman pivotally attached to the slide and to the said wheel, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
