UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE V. ANDERSON AND CHARLES XV. GOUERT, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,750, dated August 19, 1890.
' Application filed May 15, 1890. Serial No. 351,884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE V. ANDER- SON and CHARLES W. GOUERT, citizens of the United States,'both residing at Wilmington,
- in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of a toy for simulatin g target-shootin g, formed of a tube, a spring.
actuated slide and a dart, the latter being adapted to be blown against the slide, so as to release the same, whereby the slide is moved.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a toy embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof, the slide of the toy being in different position from that shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a blow pipe or tube, the end of which, opposite to the mouth-piece 13, supports a target C, back of which is a sliding rod or plate D, which is movable in the said end of the tube in a direction parallel with the target 0, and provided with a suitable head D. Connected with tube and slide is a spring E, whose tendency is to force the slide in upward direction and retain the same in its normal position, as in Fig. 1. On the slide is a shoulder F, which is adapted to engage with a tooth G on the tube, so as to temporarily hold the slide when set for operation, said tooth in the present case being the bottom wall of the opening in The operation is as follows: The slide is lowered until the shoulder F interlocks with the tooth G and the dartplaced in position. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The piece B is applied to the mouth, and the dart then blown against the slide, whereby the latter is forced outwardlya sufiicient distance to cause the shoulder F to be disengaged from the tooth G, when the spring E becomes operative and imparts quick motion to the slide, whereby the head of the latter apparently jumps or shoots up behind the target. A whistle K is secured to either side of the tube, so as to be sounded when air is blown into the mouth-piece.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tube having a mouth-piece, a target, a slide, and a dart, combined substantially as described, whereby the dart may be impelled against the slide to release the same and permit its head to rise above the target, substantially as described.
2. A tube, a spring-actuated slide fitted thereto, and a dart in the mouth-piece of the tube, said slide having a shoulder which is adapted to engage with a tooth on the tube,
'a whistle which is sounded when the dart is impelled against the slide, substantially as described.
GEORGE V. ANDERSON. CHARLES W. GOUERT.
