SMOKING-TUBE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,064, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed April 14, 1896. Serial No. 587,545. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOHN VESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Tubes, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention has relation to a tube as a substitute for a pipe for smoking tobacco or the like therein, and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of the same for said purposes.

The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a smoking-tube which shall be simple in construction, cleanly, and having such shape or form as that the objections incident to the use of the old style of smoking-pipe are avoided, because instead of push ing the ashes down into the pipe, as has hitherto been the custom, the tobacco is pushed onto the ashes, which are liberated through a screened cap or cover providedat one end of the tube second, to provide a smoking-tube adapted for tobacco and in which the several parts thereof are arranged so as to be readily assembled and disconnected for thoroughly cleaning the interior and permitting of the use of the same and also arranged internally so as to prevent ashes or nicotine being drawn into the mouth in the use thereof, and, third, to provide a smoking-tube for tobacco or the like having means provided in one end for permitting of the liberation of ashes accumulating therein from the tobacco by pushing internally the stem and its accessories through the barrel or tube, and the rear of said tube arranged so that thorough cleaning of the same can be effected by the disengagement of the members connected with the stem of the device.

My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a tube for smoking tobacco or like matter therein, constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter dcseribed and claimed.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in central section of a smoking-tube embodying the main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevational view, in detached detail, of the several members of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of a modified form of the accessories of the stem of the tube; and Fig. 4 is. an elevation a1 view, detached, of the parts of the stem illustrated in Fig.

Referring to the drawings, A is the barrel or tube, provided at the front extremity with a flanged sleeve or collar (1, snugly fitting into the complem entally-recessed wall of the tube and provided with a revoluble screen cap or cover Z), having radial openings Z) therein. This cap or cover is hinged to said sleeve or collar a and held in a closed position against the same by means of a catch 12 as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

In the rear of the tube or barrel A is provided a cap 0, of substantially the form illustrated in detail in Fig. 2, snugly fitting the outer wall and engaging the inner surface of said barrel or tube A, so as to form an internal flange c, and into which barrel or tube is inserted the stem D of the tube A, provided with a mouthpiece (I, so as to abut against the flanged portion of said tube formed by the cap 0 therein.

In the inner end of the stem D is inserted a screw-plug c, with a flan ged head a". In the head of the plug e are provided converging openings e and 6 extending rearwardly and merging with a central longitudinal channel a provided in the body of said plug and also in the stem D of the tube A.

1'' in Fig. 1 is a disk havinga central tapering perforation f, and which disk is adapted to engage arms f and f of a collar f fitting beyond the head 6 of the plug 6. This disk, when in position in the barrel or tube A, forms not only an air-escape means between the head a and the interior of the plug 6, but also serves as a means for pushing in a forward direction any accumulating ashes from the smoked tobacco within the interior of the tube A outward through the radial openings of the cap or cover I). The disk f also serves in the drawing upon the tube filled with lighted tobacco any ashes or nicotine reaching the mouth through the stem 1) and its mouthpiece cl, yet at the same time in no way preventing the free draft necessary to the smoking of the tobacco in the tube.

In Figs. 3 and 4 is illustrated a modified form of the flanged plug 0, consisting of a tube slid over the head 6 so that through the rear perforated portion the threaded portion of the plug may be passed and the conical point e adapted to be fitted through a complementally'beveled body-disk f, fitting the wall of the tube, for example, as clearly ill ustrated in Fig.

In use the pipe, when caused to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 1, is filled with tobacco and lighted and the mouthpiece of the stem placed in the mouth, and by drawing thereon the tobacco will be caused to burn in the tube A and the smoke arising therefrom to be drawn reamvardly through the tube A, disk f, converging openings 6 and e of the screw-plug 6, internal channel 6 of the stem D, and piece 01 into the mouth, wherefrom it may be liberated into the open air, and any accumulating ashes arising from the tobacco may be forced outwardly through the tube A and the radial openings of the screen cap or cover 1) into the open air by pushing the stem inwardly in the tube in either form of the device of my invention illustrated in the drawings. The screen cap or cover I) is arranged so that the radial openings thereof, if desired, may be closed absolutely, opened, or partially closed by a turn of the spoke-like wings or arms of the screen thereof, as clearly illustrated in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The inner flange of the cap 17, it will be seen, limits the extent of rearward movement of the stem and its accessories in the barrel or tube A.

It will be manifestly obvious that modifications as to minor details of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of all the parts of the same as hereinbefore described and illustrated; but,

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A smoking-tube provided with a perforated cap or cover at one end, a stem with a mouthpiece at the other, a plug with a conical point connected with said stein said plug having internal converging channels merging into a central channel of said plug and stem, and a perforated disk engaging the conical point of said plug, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. A smoking-tube provided with a stem having a mouthpiece, a detachable flanged conical-pointed plug with openings or channels leading to the central internal channel of the plug and stem, and a perforated centrally-beveled body-disk connected with said plug, substantially as and for the purposes described.
