CURTAIN-POLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,249, dated December 1, 1896.

Be it known that I, HIRAM ECKERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marine City, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Curtain-Pole, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to curtain-fixtures, and particularly to a supporting device for lace curtains and those of heavier material, such as chenille, the object in view being to provide means for attaching a curtain to the pole Without the risk of injuring the material of the curtain and without the inconvenience incident to the use of hooks and rings, as in the ordinary practice.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a curtain-pole embodying my invention, showing a portion of a curtain attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View taken contiguous to the plane of one of the terminal brackets. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken contiguous to the plane of the intermediate clamp. y

l designates the body portion of the pole embodying my invention, which is terminally supported by means of brackets 2, said pole having a longitudinal groove or channel 3, in which is tted a curtain-fastening strip 4, and in practice the curtain 5 is hung over the pole with its upper edge, for instance, hanging loosely from the front side thereof, and the strip is applied to depress the curtain into the groove or channel, said groove or channel being arranged in the upper side of the pole. The strip is held in place by means of thumbscrews 6, arranged in the terminal brackets, and said thumb-screws also serve to secure the pole against longitudinal displacement.

In the drawings such a clamp is illustrated at 7 and consists of an approximately semicircular plate of any suitable ornamental design having terminal thumb-screws S and 9, the former of which impinges against the lower side of the pole, while the latter engages the eX- posed surfaces of the retainingstrip, and thus depresses the same into the groove or channel.

From the above description it will be seen that the means which l prefer to employ for securing the curtain to its pole may be applied and removed with ease and lrapidity without the danger, incident to the use of the common forms of securing devices, of tearing or otherwise injuring the curtain. Furthermore, it will be seen that when in'place the curtain falls gracefully over and conceals the pole, which may be clothed or provided with any suitable covering 10, in common with the strip, to prevent the injury which might occur from contact with the surface of a bare pole.

The combination of brackets, a longitudinally-grooved curtain-pole terminally litted in said brackets and having a longitudinal groove, a retaining-strip seated in the groove to hold an overextending portion of a cur- IOO tain in contact with the floor of the groove and extending through said brackets, and securing devices, as thumb-screws, mounted in the brackets and engaging the outer` surface of said strip to secure the latter in the groove and'preventlongitudnal displacement of the pole, substantially as specied.
