CURTAlN-CORNICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,237, dated January 6, 1891.

T at whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS E. STRAUSS, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Cornices, of which the following is a specifioation.

This invention relates to an improved cornice for suspending curtains, lambrequins, portieres, and similar articles without tacking the same directly or indirectly to said cornice, thereby doing away with tearing or injuring said goods; and the invention con sists of a cornice provided at its rear part with a grooved strip, between which and the second tongue-shaped strip a curtain or other article is placed, said tongue-shaped strip being rigidly secured to the grooved strip by means of angular clamping-plates, which are applied by thumb-nuts to threaded posts attached to the cornice.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent rear elevations of different constructions of curtain-cornices; and Figs. 3 and 4 are a vertical transverse section on line 1 1, Fig. 1, and a sectional rear view of Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a cornice for suspending curtains of all kinds, which cornice may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material. To the rear part of the cornice A is attached a grooved strip a, the groove of which is preferably made of V-shaped cross-section. Into this groove is fitted a detachable tongue-shaped strip 1), which corresponds in shape to the groove of the strip a. The strip 1) is retained on the grooved strip a by fasteners 13, which are formed of L-shaped clamping-plates B, that are firmly applied to the strip 1) by threaded posts 0, attached to the cornice, and screwnnts O. The upper angular portion or offset of the clamping-plate B abuts against the cornice, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.

In fastening the curtain to the cornice the upper end of the curtain is interposed between the grooved strip a. and the tongue-shaped strip b, after which the clamping-plates B are tightly applied to the strip 1) by passing the threaded posts 0 through holes of the clamping-plates l3 and screwing the nuts on the threaded ends of the posts, whereby the curtain is firmly clamped and held in position without requiring any fastening devices that injure the upper part of the curtain.

The clamping devices may be quickly loosened, so as to remove the curtain, which can be done by any one without requiring specially skilled hands.

In case the cornice has angular ends the clamping-strips and fastening devices are also arranged at the ends, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

The tongueshaped fastening-strip b may be made of one or more pieces, according to the length of the cornice.

The curtain can be readily applied to the clamping-strips or removed therefrom, as required.

The cornice may be supported on brackets of any suitable construction, it being preferably provided for this purpose with sockets or eyes D, that form the connection with the supporting-brackets.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a cornice having a grooved strip at its rear part,of a detachable tongue-shaped strip, clamping-plates extending over said tongue-shaped strip and having an angular or L shaped portion abutting against the cornice, fixed screw-bolts attached to the cornice and passing through holes of the clamping-plates, and screw-nuts screwing on the posts and serving to apply the clamping-plates to the detachable strip and the latter to the fixed strip, substantially as set forth.
