To a, whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ERNEs'r B. ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, in the county of Oolurnbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain Poles and Fittings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention appertains to hangers for portieres, curtains, and like draperies, the purpose being to provide a sectional pole consisting of clamp members, between which the hanging is gripped, and to combine therewith novel securing means comprising eyed clips and ends, each being of such formation as to allow for variation in the thickness of the hanging clamped between the pole members.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

WVhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still some of the preferred embodiments are shown in the accompanying drawings, in WlllCl1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtainhanger embodying the invention and showing a lifter fitted thereto. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The curtain pole or hanger A is composed of sectionsl and 2, having a matching tongue and groove in their meeting faces for securely holding the portion of the hanging 3 arranged therebetween. The members 1 and 2 may be of any length and cross-sectional outline. The members 1 and 2 when placed together are secured either by means of end fittings 4 or clips 5 and 6 and by the combined action of both, the fittings 4: being applied to the extremities of the pole and the clips arranged at intermediate points. The distance between the gripping-faces of the members 1 and 2 depends upon the thickness of the portiere, curtain, drapery, or other hanging coming between them. To allow for variation in the diameter of the pole, the end fittings 4: are provided with openings 7 of a maximum diameter, and within the openings 7 is longitudinally arranged a spring 8 to exert a lateral pressure upon the sections to press them together with sufficient force to firmly grip the hanging 3. The end fittings t may be of any design and material and serve the dual function of giving a finished appearance to the extremities of the pole, as Well as to hold the sections 1 and 2 when assembled. The

spring 8 may be secured within the openings 7 in any manner, and in the event of the end fitting & being of Wood one end of the spring is bent, as shown at 9, and formed with a series of teeth, which are embedded into the wall of the openings 7, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. The spring 8 curves longitudinally and is of sufiicient strength to exert a lateral pressure upon the members 1 and 2 to press them together to firmly hold the hanging 3 and prevent casual displacement thereof. The outer end of the spring projects sufiiciently far to form a finger-piece to be engaged by the finger to hold the spring out of the way when placing the end piece on the pole.

The clips, fitted to the pole at points intermediate of its extremities, are approximately of 0 form and are constructed of spring material, so as to yield and adapt themselves to the diameter of the pole, while at the same time pressing the sections 1 and 2 together to cause them to firmly and securely grip the hanging 3.

The clips are formed with a suswhich is adapted to receive a lifter, such as indicated at B in Fig. 1, thereby admitting of the pole or hanger being readily placed in position or removed without necessitating the mounting of a ladder or chair. The form of clip shown in Fig. 5 is construct ed of sheet material, and near one end the blank is transversely slitted to form elements 10, which are similarly bent or curved to form an eye arranged in a plane about at a right angle to the clip, thereby enabling the eye to stand lengthwise of the pole, so as to conveniently receive a hook or corresponding part of the lifter B. The clip shown in Fig. 6 is constructed of Wire, and an end portion is bent to form an eye 11, which stands in a plane about at a right angle to the plane of the clip for the purpose herein stated.

In accordance with this in vention thed rapery or hanging 3 is arranged between the members l and 2 of the pole or hanger and is secured either by forcing the end fittings 4: upon the extremities of the sections 1 and 2 or by snapping the clips upon the pole at any determinate point or by a combined clamping action of both. Should it be desired to utilize the lifter B, the centrally-disposed clips are arranged a distance apart to admit of their eyes receiving the members of the lifter, as indicated in Fig. 1. As hereinbefore stated,

the spring 8 provides for adapting the clamping members of the pole to different thicknesses of hangings, as well as admitting of a curtain or like drapery being gathered into folds to secure any desired efiect.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A sectional pole or hanger comprising longitudinally-separated clamping members, an end fitting therefor having an opening of fixed diameter larger than the end of the pole when its parts are placed together, and a longitudinally-curved spring arranged length wise within the opening of the end fitting and having an end portion toothed and bent laterally to enter the wall of said opening at its inner end, the outer end of said spring projecting beyond the fitting to form a fingerpiece, said spring serving to. exert a lateral pressure upon the clamping members to force them together, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a sectional pole or hanger, a spring-clip having oppositely-disposed transverse slits in one end partly separating portions which are similarly bent or curved to form an eye in a plane approxinliately at a right angle to the plane of the c 1p.
