CURTAIN POLE.

HOWARD DELMONT MAYHORN, OF GOAL CENTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN-POLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed March 27, 1908. Serial No. 423,659.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD DELMONT h/IAYHORN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coal Center, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Curtain-Poles, of which the fol owing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to curtain poles, and the objects of my invention are; first, to provide a simple and inexpensive curtain pole to which curtains can be slidably connected without the use of rings or pins; second, to provide a novel fastener for attaching curtains to a pole whereby the curtains will not be injured; and third, to provide a curtain pole wherein the fastening means will be firmly held but will permit of easy adjustment of the curtains.
I attain the above objects by a curtain pole that will be presently described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of a curtain pole constructed in accordance'with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a curtain fastener.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a pole 1 with a longitudinal dove-tailed groove 2 extending from one end thereof to the other. In the groove 2 are slidably mounted a plurality of hangers each com prising a body section 3, which, in end elevation or cross section, is substantially V- shaped so as to fit with the groove 2. To each body section, intermediate the ends thereof is riveted or otherwise secured, as at 4 a fastener having resilient gripping arms 5, said arms being clamped to the upper edge of a curtain 6 by a set screw 7, passing through said arms.
Upon the ends of the pole 1 are detachably mounted caps or ornamentations 8 to prevent the fasteners from sliding from the ends of a pole when the curtains are adjusted.
The side walls of the body section 3 of each fastener frictionally engage with the side walls of the groove 2, so that the fasteners will be held in the position to which they have been adjusted, and can readily be ad justed to any desired position along the pole. Furthermore, should one of the fasteners be broken, it will be noted that the same can readily be removed from the pole without disturbing the other fasteners, as a strong pull outwardly on the fastener will compress the body sufficiently to allow same to be withdrawn from the groove 2, and another fastener may be inserted by pressing the side walls of the body 3 together sufficiently to enter same in the groove 2 and as the fastener is forced inwardly, the side walls expand in the groove 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I have devised a novel pole for holding curtains without injuring the same, the curtains being easily adjusted or draped upon the pole.
Having now described my invention; what I claim as new, is
A curtain pole having a dove-tailed groove in one side extending through the length of the pole, a plurality of curtain hangers slidably mounted in said groove, each hanger comprising a body section formed of a springmetal plate doubled so as to have a V-shape in crosssection, the side walls of said body section frictionally engaging the side Walls of the groove in the pole and free to be compressed towards each other, and a curtain clamp carried by each body section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD BELMONT MAYHORN.
Witnesses GEORGE HANEY, GEORGE MARKER.
