To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER .T. CANNON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in curtain poles, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive pole, wherein the usual links and suspending pins employed for securing curtains to the pole are dispensed with.

The present invention represents a line of division in connection with my improved curtain and shade fixture filed July 18, 1906, Ser. No. 226,709, wherein I have disclosed a novel adjustable fixture for raising and lowering the brackets which support my improved pole.

The detail construction of my improved curtain pole will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pole, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the pole in position to receive the ends of curtains, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line x-;r of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow of said figure, Fig 5 is a similar view taken on the line yy of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow of said figure, Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of a portion of my improved pole taken on the line z-z of Fig. 3.

In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated two brackets 1 adapted to'be carried by a window frame. These brackets may be of a conventional form but I preferably use a bracket comprising a triangular body portion 2 and an extensible arm 3 adjustably secured to the body portion 2 and bent at their outer ends to provide hangers 4 for my improved curtain pole.

The pole consists of two separable bars 5 and 6 connected by pivoted links 7, which permit of the upper bar 6 being raised to a position shown in Fig. 3 by means of a handle 8 projecting centrally from said bar 6. One of the links 7 is formed with a shoulder 9 adapted to engage a stop pin 10 on the lower bar 5, to limit the lateral movement of the bar 6. To each end of the lower bar 5 is secured a curved guard 11 concealing the ends of the two pole sections or bars. The upper side of the lower bar 5 is provided with a convex projection 12 projecting into a corresponding concavity 14 in the under side of the upper bar, to provide a clamp to secure curtains therein, suitable pin 15 projecting from the convex surface 12 to engage the curtains. The lower bar 5 of the curtain pole is formed with longitudinal slots 16, on opposite sides to receive the inwardly turned ends 17 of slides 18, each of said slides having an inwardly and downwardly projecting plate 19, adapted to engage below the adjacent hanger 4, a depending lip 20 serving as a finger-piece by means of which the slide is adjusted upon the bar 5.

The novel construction of my improved curtain pole permits of one or more curtains being adj ustably mounted between the sections or bars of the pole, without being injured or disfigured by the same.

My improved pole is preferably constructed of wood, but it is obvious than any desired material may be used.

Such changes in the size, proportion and minor details of construction as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In combination with hangers, a curtain pole c0n1pris ing separable bars, one of said bars having a convex surface extending into a corresponding concavity formed in the other of said bars, pins carried by said convex surface, slides adjustably mounted upon one of said bars and adapted to engage said hangers, and means to limit the separable movement of one bar with relation to the other bar, substantially as described.

2. The combination with hangers, of a curtain p'ole comprising separable bars linked together one above another, guards carried by one of said bars and adapted to shield the ends of its adjoining bar, a convex surface formed upon the lowermost bar and projecting into a corresponding concavity formed in the uppermost bar, means to limit the separable movement of said bars, and means for detachably connecting said pole to said hangers.

3. The combination with curtain pole hangers, of a curtain pole, comprising separable bars linked together, one of said bars being provided with longitudinal grooves, and slides having inturned edges engaging in said grooves, and each having a projecting plate for engagement with said pole hangers to secure the pole therein.
