SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,326, dated August 25, 1896.

To all whom zit may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL KIRSHNER, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for the Human Head, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates more particularly to the vizors of caps; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter claimed, by means of which the vizor is rendered extensible and the wearer of the cap enabled to lengthen or shorten the vizor of the same at pleasure or as occasion may require or make preferable for the protection of the eyes from sunlight, &c., as in cycling, for instance.

The improvements claimed by me are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cap, partly in section, and showing the vizor when not extended. Fig. 2 is also a side View, partly in section, but showing the vizor extended. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the vizor both extended and not extended. Fig. 4 is a View, somewhat enlarged, of the under side of the extensible part of the vizor.

It will be noticed that in Fig. 3 one of the pockets at is partly broken away, so as to show one of the elastic bands e.

In the practice of my invention, in the form illustrated in the drawings, I make the vizor of a cap a in two separate parts 17 and c, the part I) being of the usual form and construction in general use and attached to the cap in the usual way. The part 0 corresponds in general outline and construction with the part b, but is held in position differently, the inner ends of the part c resting in the pockets at d and being also attached to the body of the cap, substantially as sh own, by means of elas tic bands 6 e. The part 0 also carries on its under side a metal clasp f, the ends 9 g of which are sewed or riveted to the part 0, but the body of which is so bent as to be adapted to receive and clasp the front edge of the part b when the part c is drawn out or extended, thus holding the two parts in a fixed and extended position with respect to each other. The pockets cl cl, as shown, are formed of cloth and are adapted to receive, carry, and cover the inner ends of the part c. The small hook h is'adapted to hold the front edge of the part c, when not extended, closely in contact with the part b.

It will be noticed that the cap is provided in front and above the vizor with a ball-andsocket fastener z', corresponding in form with a well-known style of glove-fastener, the spring-ball j of which is adapted, operating in connection with either of the sockets k 76 on the parts b and c, to draw down and forward, as well as to hold in such position, the crown of the cap, as is done in the case of the well-known golf or cycling caps.

I do not mean to limit myself to the exact form or details of construction shown, or to the exact shape or style of cap illustrated in the drawings, as all the same may be greatly varied without affecting the substance of my invention.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a cap provided with the usual vizor, of an extensible part 0, pockets d, 62-, adapted to receive and cover the inner ends of the part c, elastic bands e, 6 attached substantially as shown, and adapted to hold part c to the body of the cap, and a clasp f attached to the under side of part c, and adapted to clasp the front edge of part b, and hold parts I) and c in proper relative position when extended.

2. The combination, with a cap provided with the usual vizor, of an extensible part 0, pockets d, 01, adapted to receive and cover the inner ends of part c, elastic bands 6, 6 attached substantially as shown, and adapted to hold part c to the body of the cap, a clasp f attached to the under side of part c, and adapted to clasp the front edge of part b, and hold parts I) and cin proper relative position when extended, and a hook h adapted to hold the front edge of the part 0, when not extended, closely in contact with part b.

3.
