' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KATIE D. HEAD, OF LAVVRENCEBURG, KENTUCKY.
smeT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,687, dated'July 28, 1896.
Application filed December 31,1895. Serial No. 573,956. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KATIE D. HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceburg, in the county of Anderson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in skirt holders or elevators; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap adjustable attachment whereby the skirt may be readily held up.
It has for its further object to provide a readily-applied device by which the skirt may be easily held up under the gossamer, leaving both hands to manipulate umbrella, packages, or the like, and preventing the skirt being soiled in sitting in street-cars or in walking on rainy or bad weather.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts constituting the improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail in vertical section with parts in elevation. Fig. el isa detail of the clamp for engaging the skirt, and Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the hangers.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a belt provided with a buckle a, and this belt is designed to be passed around the waist over the skirt and under the gossamer. B is another belt arranged at a sufficient distance below the upper belt so as to be placed over the hips of the wearer. It is also provided with a buckle and strap, whereby it may be fastened and adjusted to the wearer. These two belts are connected by the vertical strips C, which have at their upper ends loops c, through which the 1upper belt is adjusted and at a point opposite the lower belt provided with similar loops c', through which the lower belt passes and is adjustable. These vertical strips C are extended beyond the lower belt and are provided with buckles D. E are straps extending from the lower belt and passed through these buckles and provided at their lower ends with the wire clamps F, which are of novel construction, each being formed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself at its center and forming the coils or convolutes f, which are engaged in the wire hanger or holder H on the lower ends of the lower straps. These lower straps may be adjusted so as to bring the clamps to any desired height.
In practice the elevator is applied as follows: Place the upper belt around thev waist and fasten. Next place the lower belt around the hips and secure it. Then place on the gossamer and pin to the attachment at the waistline, back, sides, and' middle of front. It can be sewed on or attached by safety-pins, as may be desired. Then with both hands pick up the skirt about'six inches, more or less, from the bottom at the middle of the front and middle of the back and at the sides opposite the seams or where the seams would come in a gored skirt. Then lay in an upward plat, if
the skirt is very wide, except at the front lay then draw up the lower straps to the height 9 desired a greater or less distance below the hips. Y
If desired, the straps may remain drawn up or may be let down each time after removing them from the skirt.
IOO
ing straps extending from the lower belt i adapted to pass through and be adjust-amy held in said buckles and clasps mounted in I5 hangers on the lower ends of said straps and adapted to engage the bottom of the skirt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speciication in the presence of two subscrib zo ing witnesses.
KATIE I). HEAD. Witnesses: A
MAGGIE GIVIDEN, ADA SHORT.
