Description

J. A. WHITNEY. KNIFE 0R SGISSORS SHARPENER.
(No Model.)
N0. 564,403. Patented July 21, 1896.
co., vuofau'ruo., WASHINGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. WHITNEY, OF NORWALK, OHIO.
KNIFE OR SCISSORS SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,403, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed Tune 8, 1895. Serial Nol 552,119. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. VHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife or Scissors Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening knives, scissors, and the like.
The obj ect of my invention is not only to provide inexpensive and practical means whereby knives and scissors may be readily sharpened, but to so construct the device with a number of deep recesses or depressions about and subjacent to its working portions that the filings will fall therein and be securely held thereby and leave the file unobstructed and free to out, instead of allowing the filings to clog the le.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my combined knife and scissors Sharpener. Fig. 2 is a plain view of its top. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section. Fig. 4 is a view of the le.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views;
A refers to a rectangular base, of wood or other suitable material, provided with a transverse groove ct, above which are inclined walls ct', d2, and a3.
B refers to the file, having two .fiat cutting surfaces or faces and adapted to fit snugly7 in and to be adj ustably held by the groove a., in order that it may be readily raised, lowered, or reversed to compensate for wear.
C represents a number of deep recesses or depressions, circular in cross-section and of sufficient diameter to out away a portion of both inclined walls a and a3 and a portion on either side of the groove a and terminating subjacent thereof and are designed to securely hold the filings. Y
The walls a' and as are similarly and so ina clined that when a knife-blade is held fiatwise and snugly against one of them, as d', with lower or cutting edge thereof bearing against the file and drawn toward the operator a few times thereon, as to give such cutting edge a neat bevel on one side thereof, and by repeating the operation on the oppositeinclined wall ai a similar bevel will be given the opposite side of such cutting edge, thereby neatly sharpening the blade.
NVall a2 is designed for use in sharpening scissors, and is so inclined that when the fiat or inner surface of one of the blades thereof is held snugly thereon with the cutting edge thereof bearing against and reciprocated on the file, as to give such edge the desired bevel, thereby sharpening the blade.
I am aware that knife and scissors sharpeners are not entirely new, and I do not claim the same broadly; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a device of the character described, a base A having a transverse groove a an inclined wall d2 and deep recesses or depressions C, of greater diameter than the width of the groove, for holding filings, in combination with a rectangular ile removably held in said groove, substantially as set forth.
2. A knife-Sharpener, consisting of a base A, having a transverse groove @,inclined walls a and a3, and a number of recesses C, of greater diameter than the width of the groove for holding filings in combination with a rectangular lile B, removably held in said groove substantially as described.
3. A combined knife and scissors Sharpener, consisting of a base A, having a transverse groove ct, inclined walls a', a2 and as, and having a number of recesses C, extending from the walls a and a3, to a point below the groove; in combination with a rectangular file B, removably held in said groove 5 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. WHITNEY. Witnesses:
CHARLES SUHR, ARTHUR E. ROWLEY.
