NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY W. MARSH, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
PAPER-HANGERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 580,287, dated April 6, 1897. Application filed August 14, 1896. Serial No. 602,750. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY W. MARSH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hangers Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved tool for the use of paper-hangers for perforating wall-paper, so that it may be readily torn off at such points desired.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby wet or damp paper may be perforated as well as dry paper.
The I invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paper-cutting tool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a central horizontal section.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 design ates a handle of any suitable material,
having a central bore 2 in one end and a ferrule 3 at the extremity. Located in said bore are two semicircular rods or shanks 4, to the outer ends of which is journaled a perforating disk 5, having its periphery or edge beveled or sharpened, divided by radial slits 6 into a number of square teeth 7. The distance between these teeth is very slight, so that the perforations made by drawing the disk over a piece of paper will be veryclose to each other. The said rods at their outer ends are cut away on their inner sides and in rear of said cut-away portions are formed with opposite triangular recesses. The perforatingdisks are located in said cut away portions, while seated in said recesses is a triangularshaped metal plate 8, having a triangular slot 9 in its front or small end, the walls of which are serrated and serve to remove paste from the disk and also to sharpen the teeth thereof.
The journal of the disk is made removable, so that the two rods may be easily disconnected, if desired, and when the rods are pushed into the recess of the handle they will be firmly held together and in place.
In using the device the disk is drawn over the surface of the paper on the line to be cut, When the teeth will cut through the same, making a number of slits therein, so that the piece of paper to be detached is held to the other portion by the uncut portions between the slits or perforations, and as these are very narrow, owing to the small space between the teeth, the paper to be removed can be readily torn off, leaving a smooth edge. The other end of the handle may be provided with a seaming-roller or any other useful device, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-- The combination with the handle having a cylindrical bore in one end and the ferrule having a corresponding aperture, of the semicylindrical rods, cut away at the outer ends and formed with opposite triangular recesses on the inner sides, the perforating-disk, located between the outer ends of said rods and journaled thereto, the radial teeth on the pe riphery of said disk, the triangular metal plate located in said triangular recesses, having a slot in its front end with serrated walls, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY WV. MARSH.
Witnesses:
