MEMORANDUM BOOK- Patented July 14, 1896.
WITN ESSES G iNVENTES.
A BY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER J. GALLAGER, OF MOORE, PENNSYLVANIA, lA'ND GUSTAV LANGBEIN, OF WESTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
-. MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,762, dated July 14, 1896.
' Application fllsd January 29,1895. Serial Io. 677,250. (No nodal.) J
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, ALEXANDER J. GAL- LAGER, residing at Moore, Delaware county,
Pennsylvania, and GUSTAV LANGBEIN, residing at Westville, Gloucester county, New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Memorandum-Books, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists in providing a memorandum-book with means for reliably hold ing the covers thereof in closed position, and adapting the ends or endflaps of the covers to be reduced or thinned, for convenience of grasping and occupation in the pocket of the owner of the book, and other advantages are presented, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of a memorandum-book embodying our invention, respectively in closed and open position. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of the book with v pocket on one of the covers thereof. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view, on a reduced scale, of the body of the book. Fig. 6 represents a plan view of one of the covers, showing the pockets thereon adapted to receive the tongue of the body, shown in Fig. 5. f
Similar letters of reference spending parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designote the covers of thebook, and O the body or signatures within the same, fastened to one of the covers thereof. The ends of the covers are extended beyond the body in the longitudinal direction thereof, forming the flaps D 7 socket F, andon the inner face of the flap E indicate correis the head or stud G, said socket and head being so disposed that when the covers are 3 closed the head enters the socket and engages therewith, thus holding said'covers tightly in closed position, it being noticed that when the flaps are brought together the flap D is bent inwardly toward the flap E, thus causing the interlocking of the two flaps by the engagement of the stud and socket, as has been stated, by which provision also the end of the book is thinned, since the flaps occupy less spacethan the thickness of the book, whereby the latter may be readily grasped and conveniently placed in the pocket. of the owner and withdrawn from the same, the withdrawal being easily accomplished, as the flaps do not present a thick and blunt edge, which would not be the case were the end of the'book of the thicknesses the entire book in cross-section. 1 'In order to attach the body C to a cover of the book, the latter is formed with the tongue H, and said cover is formed with the pockets J, either of which may receive said tongue, as will be apparent on reference to Figs. 5 and 6. The body when old, worn, or used up. may be removed and substituted by a new one.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as'new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-+- A memorandum-book having a cover with extended flaps at its outer end,.one of said flaps being flexible and the other comparatively stiif, and fastening means on the inner sides of said flaps, said parts being combined substantially as described.
