ATTORNEY.
ANDREW B GRAHAM PHOTO-HMO WASHINGTONDC 9 device by the use of which the trousers are tic material and provided with a series of JOSEPH M. FLANNERY, OF BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-SUPPORTING BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,577, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed February l7 1896. Serial No. 579,560. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osnrn M. FLANNERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporting Belts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 indicates a plan view of the inner side of my improved garment-supporting belt. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the front of the same. Fig. 3 indicates a front elevation of a figure, showing the application of my improved garment-supporting belt. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
My invention relates to that class of devices adapted to support or suspend nether garments on the person.
The discomfort occasioned by the stress of the ordinary suspenders upon the shoulders when used for the purpose of supporting trousers is a source of nevenending annoyance to all who use them, and the difficulty of maintaining a neatfit in the trousers about the body,'owing to the uneven strain of the suspender upon the band thereof, is likewise a very great annoyance to those who appreciate-neat dressing.
The object of my invention is to produce a naturally suspended upon the body and the strain or stress upon the band of the trousers due to the upward pull of the ordinary'suspenders entirely avoided, and at the same time the greatest possible comfort and freedom of the upper portion of the body secured. This purpose I accomplish by the device hereinafter specifically described, which consists of a belt of any suitable shape buttoned around the waist, as shown in the drawings, the central section of which is formed of elasrows of fasteners, the end sections having V- shaped elastic pieces inserted at or near the rear thereof, so as to enable the belt to be buttoned reasonably tight and yet not rigidly secured around the body, said end sections also being provided with complemental fasteners on their inner end to engage one of the rows of fasteners on the middle or central section. The end sections of the belt at the front and rear, respectively, are provided with springfasteners vertically secured upon the same, having a series of convolutions between which the trousers-buttons are secured, as hereinafter. described, the buttons on the trousers being secured upon the inner face of the waistband to admit of this, whereby the belt suspender or supporter may be lengthened or shortened and said garment may also be drawn up and let down, as desirable.
I will now describe my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which like letters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Referring to said drawings, A represents a garment-supporting belt formed of three sections or parts a, a, and b, the said belt being adapted to beapplied around the Waist over the shirt and under the body of the trousers, one of the sections, a, having buttons 0, and section a having buttonholes d, in which said buttons engage to admit of this. The rear ends of sections a a are provided with buttonholes for the purpose of enabling the same to be adj ustably secured upon the section b, which is provided with a number of buttons 6 6, arranged in rows on said section I) to admit of the belt being shortened and lengthened to suit different-sized persons. Said section b is made of elastic material. Sections (1. a are provided with V- shaped pieces of elastic material 6 e, inserted therein immediately above the hips when the belt is applied. The sections a a are also provided at the front andrear, respectively, of the same with the convoluted spring-fastenors ff, which are sewed or otherwise suitably secured upon the outer surface of the same, the convolutions being arranged vertically, so that the trousers-buttons secured to the inner side of the trousers-band may be detachably fastened between the convolutions of the spring-fasteners, so as to enable the trousers to be lowered and drawn up accordingly as the buttons are secured in the high est and lowest of the convolutions. The lower ends of said spring-fasteners may be protected, if desirable, by the patent-leather pad g, secured upon said sections a a. The inner sides of said sections a a are also provided with clips h h or other suitable device attached thereto by an elastic band, by means of which said belt may be fastened to the shirt and to a considerable degree suspended thereby, and at the same time the downward pull of the clips serves to prevent the shirt from bulging upwardly.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a trousers-supporter comprising a belt formed of three sections, the central section being formed of elastic material, and having a series of rows of fasteners, each of the end sections having a series of complemental fasteners on their inner ends to engage one of the rows of fasteners on the central sections, whereby said sections may be adjusted; each of the front sections having V-shaped pieces of elastic material, and having a series of fasteners arranged vertically on different horizontal planes for the reception of the waistbandbuttons of the trousers, substantially as herein described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a trousers-supporter comprising a belt formed of three sections, the central section being formed of elastic material, and having a series of rows of fasteners, each of the end sections having a series of complemental fasteners on their inner ends to engage one of the rows of fasteners on the central sections, whereby said sections may be adjusted; each of the front'sections having V-shaped pieces of elastic material, and with a series of spring-fasteners having a number of convolutions, between which the waistband buttons or fasteners may be secured, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 12th day of February, A. D. 1896.
JOSEPH M. FLANNERY.
