SPECIFIGATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 557,962, dated April 7, 1896. Application filed January 9,1896. Serial No. 574,843. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, HENRY BRUNING and EDWARD Ross, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts and Like Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to leather belts and other wearing-apparel made in section flexibly connected with each other; andthe object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in belts and like articles, wherebya fine appearance and increased strength is given to the belt, and the inner face of the belt is perfectly smooth, so as not to rub and chafe the dress and wearer.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im provement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig.

1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on about line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Sectional leather belts and like articles as heretofore constructed were provided at the end of each section with an eye formed of a separate piece of leather doubled up and sewed or cemented at its ends to the opposite faces of the section. With the improvement presently to be described in detail the separate piece for forming the eye is entirely dispensed with and the eye is formed directly on and by the end of the section, and the belt is left perfectly smooth on the inside, so as not to rub the wearers dress or chafe the body.

The belt shown in Fig. 1 is provided with front end sections A and A and a rear or back section A connected at one end by a ring or link B with the adjacent end of the section A, and the other end of the said back section A is connected by a ring or link B with the section A, adapted to be connected at its free end to a buckle O, secured on the free end of the section A. Each section of the belt is connected with its .ring or link by means of an eye A formed by doubling the end of the section, as plainly shown in the drawings, the

extreme end A of the eye A being sewed, cemented, or otherwise secured in a socket or recess A formed in the section adjacent to the eye and preferably on the inner side of the section, as illustrated in the drawings. By this arrangement an ornamental raised portion A is formed on the outer face of the section, it being understood that said raised portion A and the socket A are integral parts of the section and are formed by suitable dies or like means. It will be seen that we thus form the main portion of the strap adjacent to the connecting-ring with an embossed or offset recess which does not open out of the side edges of the strap, but terminates short thereof, and the extremity of the strap is fit ted and secured in said recess with its inner face approximately flush with that of the main portion.

The shape and depth of the socket or recess A correspond to the shape and thickness of the end A, so that when the latter is secured in said socket it completely fills it and leaves no projection whatever on the inner face of the belt, as will be readily understood by ref erence to Fig. 1.

In forming the eye A the width of the belt is somewhat narrow or contracted to permit the ring or link B to have a free movement in the eye.

A loop D may be secured to the raised portion A at the rear end of the section A, as shown in Fig. 1, for attaching a key, chain, or like article to the belt.

Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Abelt comprising a strap and a connectingring, the strap having its end doubled up and passed through the ring, the main portion of the strap adjacent to said ring being embossed or offset forming a recess which terminates short of the side edges of the strap and the extremity of the strap being fitted and secured in said recess with its inner face approxi mately flush with that of the main portion, substantially as shown and described.
