NECKSCARF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,135, dated March 10, 1896. Application filed April 11, 1894. SerialvNo. 507,091. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. COMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty Corner, Somerset c'ounty,`New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarfs or Neckwear, fully described and represented in the following specification and the 'accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements in scarfs or neckwear, whereby the attachment of a series of coverings to the same scarf-knot is facilitated, and the said coverings are also protected, when desired, by a removable guard over' the upper edge of the same, and the under ones of the series are also protected while the outer one isk in use by a series of removable waterproof shields applied between the successive coverings.

The invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawings, in which-` Figure 1 is a diagram of theblank; Fig. 2, the blank bent to the desired form with the prongs turned inwardly; Fig. 3, a diagram of a fabric covering for the form; Fig. 4, a horizontal cross-section ofthe form with two coverings and a lining-shield, the outer covering and lining partly removed. Fig. 5 is a diagram showing the front of a shirtbosom in horizontal section with' a similar section of the form and one of its coverings secured thereon by the prongs. Fig. 6 is a diagram of the blank for the neck-guard, and Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the form with the rear side broken away to show the neckguard engaged with a loop inside the form. Fig. 8 shows the neckscarf mounted upon such form and having a neck-guard secured by two prongs.

In the drawings, a denotes the blank; b, prongs formed integrally near its margin ,to attach the covering c, which is preferably formed, as shown in Fig. 3, with holes d to fit such prongs.

The blank is formed with tongue e, having points e to engage the neck-strap g, the whole blank being stamped out of suitable material, as sheet metal, and the prongs b cut and bent at right angles thereto in a single operation. The covering is made larger than the blank to project over the entire edge of the same, as indicated by dotted line a in attach the bosom-cover or tailpiece c'. covering c, when secured upon the blank,

Several layers of covering material arekapplied to the form at once, as shown in Fig. 4.

The blank is provided with prongs f to attach theneck-strap g and with prongs h to The laps over its edge upon the inner side, as indicated by the dotted line c' in Fig. 1, leaving the .prongs fand h exposed, so that the strap g and bosom-cover t' may be attached or detached at pleasure. After the attachment of these parts the blank with its covering is bent into the shape of the knot k, Fig. 8, as indicated in the form k in Fig. 2, the tongue e projecting through a slit in the covering, as shown at e2 in Fig. 3, and the whole device is then in readiness for use.

The form is of tubular shape and the edges of the blank, when bent to make the form, are permanently separated a sufficient distance to provide an opening tthrough which the edges of the fabric may be inserted and lapped over upon the inner side, as shown in Fig. 4. As the front side of the form supports the outer side of the knot and gives its shape to the latter, it is evident that the fabric must be lapped over the top and bottom edges of the form, and when secured by suitable means upon the inner side of the form the covering is held smoothly where it is exposed to view.

In manufacturing the scarfs upon a large scale with such ametallic form, the coverings would be stamped out of suitable fabric by machinery in large numbers, and may thus be made with the apertures d corresponding to the positions of the prongs, andthe purchaser of the scarf could be provided with any desired number of such coverings to replace the one upon the form when soiled. The duplicate coverings thus form a new article of manufacture.

In Fig. 4 two layers or coverings c are shown provided with an intermediate lining j. A series of such linings may be used to protect the inner coverings from perspiration vwhen the outer covering becomes soiled, one of the linings in such case being removed with the outer covering when it is desired to expose the succeeding covering.

IOO l The blank a may be made, as shown in Fig. 1, with two rows of fasteners h b' around the margin, and thus used to secure separate coverings independently upon the form, so that each may be removed in turn by releasing one set or row only of the fasteners. Such fasteners would in practice extend wholly around the blank, so as to securcall the edges of the several coverings independently, the inner covering being secured to the outer row of fasteners, b', and the outer covering being secured to the adjacent row of fasteners, I), which latter would be accessible to remove such outer covering, although the fasteners b would be covered thereby. The removal of the outer covering would expose the fastoners b in turn. By this construction each covering may be detached separately as it becomes soiled, leaving the other covering or coverings properly secured to retain the same in place until soiled in like manner. Then all the coverings are worn and removed a similar series of coverings may be applied and secured by the same fasteners.

The top edge of the knot la maybe protected upon its inner side by a guard l, formed by secu ring a suitable covering over a metal blank m, (shown in Fig. 6,) which may b e bent into U form and attached to the forln 7s by prongs n projected through holes n/ in the blank, as shown in Fig. 8, or by extending the inner end of the guard through a loop formed inside the form. In such case the blank m would be made, as shown in dotted lines m, with a tail to extend downward through the loop 0, as shown in Fig. '7. The guard in either case may be readily removed from the knot and recovered, the covering being secured by sewing through holes p or by furnishing the blank fm, with prongs like those shown in Fig. 1.

It will be observed that the prongs I), f and 7L are projected wholly within the form 7a', Fig, 2, and that the fasteners by which the coveringis secured to the form are whollyconcealed. The prongs b, f and h furnish integral fasteners; but other concealed fasteners maybe used, if desired, to secure a series of coverings detachably upon the form.

The form 7c operates to connect the neckstrap g and tailpiece 'L' independently of the covering by attachment to the inner side of the form, thus permitting the removal of the covering when desired without detaching either the neck-strap or tailpiece.

IIeretofore various kinds of blanks and cores have been used upon which the knot of a scarf has been constructed, and I do not therefore claim the mere use of a blank or corel for such purpose; but my invention is designed to facilitate the renewed application of the covering to the scarf-knot by the user and not by the manufacturer, and thus provides detachable fastenings which permit the ready removal of the covering and the substitution of another, also a covering having the apertures d corresponding with such fastenings, and it also (unlike other constructions) furnishes a bond of union between the neckstrap and tailpiece independent of the covering for the knot. The covering may thus be renewed without disconnecting the neckstrap from the tailpiece or detaching either from the form which I employ.

It will be understood that the coverings c are made interchangeable and may be provided with suitable apertures d corresponding to the same set of fasteners upon the form or blank, so that the coverings may be bought and sold in any desired number and may be substituted for one another upon the form by the user.

I am aware that foundations of various kinds, as blanks, cores, tubes and clasps, have been devised to give shape to a scarf-knot and to secure the various parts of the scarf to the foundation, and I do not therefore claim such a foundation broadly.

My form k differs from tubular forms herctofore used in having the permanent vertical openingt at the back, so that a detachable covering may have its rear edges extended through such opening and secured upon the inner side of the form.

My invention is intended to facilitate the renewed application of the covering to the scarf-knot by the user and not by the maker, and thus provides concealed fastenings upon the form and a covering which may have apertures d corresponding wit-h such fastenings, and it also, unlike other constructions, furnishes abond of union between the neckstrap and the tailpiece independent of the removable covering. The coveringmay thus be renewed without disconnecting the neckstrap from the tailpiece, or detaching either from the tubular form which I employ.

I am aware that a tubular form closed at the back when in use and having no covering upon the back, but upon the front side only, has been heretofore used, as in United States Patent No. 131,884, granted November 1, 1872, and that other forms of various shapes have been employed to merely shape the knot by winding a scarf about the same and that detachable fastenings have been applied to a completed scarf, as in Patent No. 429,806, granted June 10, 1890. I fully disclaim such constructions, as my invention is distinguished from the same bythe features which I have pointed out and claimed herein.

Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim herein is- 1. The form 7c for a scarf-knot, having the permanent tubular shape with opening tat the back, and having along the edge of the form a series of fasteners for securing coverings detachably upon the form, such fasteners being adapted to fasten and release the coverings, substantially as herein set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a scarfknot having the form 7a' of tubular shape with opening t at the back and having along the edge of the form a series of fasteners for se- ICO IIO

curing coverings detachably thereon, such fasteners being adapted to fasten and release the coverings as set forth, a series of coverings secured upon the form and adapted to be 5 worn and removed in turn, and a corresponding series of removable waterproof shields applied between the successive coverings.

3. A scarf-knot having the form k of tubular shape with opening t at the back, and having along the entire edge of the form upon the inner face a series of fastenings adapted to hold coverings detachably to the form, and a series of removable coverings applied to the form with the margin of the coverings lapped over the edges and secured detachably upon the inner side of the form, substantially as herein set forth.

4. The form 7c for a scarf-knot having the permanent tubular shape with vertical opening t at the back, the form being provided at the opposite edges with two or more sets of integral prongs b, b', adapted to hold two or more coverings separately upon the form and to repeatedly fasten and release the coverings, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with the scarf-knot form having the loop o, of the removable guard, consisting of the metallic blank m covered with suitable fabric and bent into U 3o form, and fitted over the top edge of the knot,

with the tail m inserted in the loop, substantially as herein set forth.

6. In a scarf-knot, the combination,with the tubular form 7o having the opening if at the back, with the series of integral fasteners upon the inner face of the form along the edges of the same, of the series of interchangeable coverings c provided with the series of apertures d corresponding to the fasteners upon the form k', and the coverings being adapted to lap over the edges of the form upon its inner side to engage the said fasteners, substantially as herein set forth.

7. A scarf-knot having the form k' of tubular shape, with opening t at the back, and provided with the integral pins f and h for the neck-strap g and tailpiece t', a series of coverings applied to the form and secured detaehably to the entire edge of the form, and the neck-strap g and tailpiece 'i attached to the inner side of the form by the integral pins independent of the coverings, substantially as set forth.
