SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,562, dated March 3, 1896.
Application tiled December 3,1, 1895. Serial No. 573,929. (No model.)
To all whom, t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. CALDER- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in stovepipe attachments.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of stovepipes, to dispense with the elbows often employed for connecting a vertical stovepipe with a chimneyopening, and to provide simple, inexpensive, and effective means whereby the horizontal portion of a stovepipe will be capable of vertical adjustment to suit chimney-openings of different heights.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto'appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a stovepipe provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the stovepipe attachment, showing the inner side thereof.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
l designates an oblong frame designed to be secured to a vertical stovepipe 2 at an opening thereof and provided at opposite sides with vertical ways 3, receiving a verticallymovable slide 4, which carries a collar 5. The collar 5 is adapted to receive the horizontal stovepipe section, and the slide is capable of vertical movement to raise or lower the horizontal portion of the stovepipe to bring it to the desired elevation to correspond with the chimney-opening.
The ways 3 are L-shaped, and their retaining inwardly-extending portions, which overlap the inner face of the slide, terminate short of the ends of the opening of the oblong frame to provide open spaces 6. The slide extends above and below the collar 5, and the portion 7 at one side of the collar is of greater length than the portion 8 at the other side of the collar, and the slide is adapted to be moved longitudinally or vertically of the oblong frame to bring the outer end of the shorter portion 8 within the opening of the oblong frame. Vhen the outer end of the shorter portion 8 of the slide is carried within the opening of the oblong frame, the slide is adapted to be swung outward to remove it from the frame.
The collar is adapted to be adjusted the entire length of the opening of the oblong frame, and the slide 4 will move up and down on the inner face of the stovepipe 2. When it is desired to arrange it at the bottom of the frame, the shorter portion is arranged below the collar, and when is desired to locate the collar at the upper extremity of the oblong frame the slide must be removed and reversed to bring the shorter portion S at the top. The slide is secured at any desired adjustment by a clamping-screw 9, which is mounted in athreaded perforation of the oblong frame, preferably at the bottom thereof,
'and is adapted to engage the outer face of the slide.
It will be seen that the attachment for stovepipes is simple, inexpensive, and effective, that it will permit a ready adjustment of the collar to suit the elevation of a chimneyopening, and that the slide may be readily removed when desired.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.
What I claim isl. An attachment for stovepipes comprising a frame provided with an opening, and having ways at opposite sides of the openings terminating short of the ends thereof, and a slide removably and reversibly mounted in the ways and carrying a collar located intermediate of the ends of the slide, substantially as described.
2. A stovepipe attachment comprising a frame provided with an opening, and having ways at opposite sides of the openings terminating short of the ends thereof, and a slide removably and reversibly mounted in the ways and carrying a collar located intermediate of the ends of the slide, the portion of IOO the slide at one side of the collar being shorter In Jtestimony that l claim the foregoing as than that at the opposite side of the same, the lny own I have hereto affixed my signature in ro shorter portion being of less length than the the presence of two witnesses.
longitudinal opening of the frame, and the 5' longer portion being of suiieient length to GLOhGE G CALDILRWYOOD cover the longitudinal opening of the frame `Witnesses: when the collar is at nn extremity thereof, ELMORE E. XVILLlS,
substantially as described. l WALTER L. AYER.
