B W FARNHAM WINDOW CURTAIN AND PILLOW SHAM SUPPORTEB.
wiweooao provided in or upon curtains or shams.
UNITED TATES ATENT Fries.
EDWVARD WILSON FARNHAM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,619, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed S temb r 8,1895. Serial No. 561,263. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILsoN FARN- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful WVindew-Curtain and Pillow-Sham Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in window-curtain supporters and pillow-sham holders, whereby the use of clumsy poles and brackets is obviated; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a good substantial supporter for curtains and pillowshams which will be practically invisible; second, to obviate the necessity for the use of poles and pole-brackets and provide a means of support easily put up and removed, and when removed to be packed in a small space, and, third, to provide a support that will remove the necessity for rings and pins for holding curtains and shams by passing the supporter through small shirrs or loops made and I attain-these objects bythe use of clutch-brackets and adjustable wire line, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window, showing the curtain-supporter in position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of head-board of bedstead, showing pillow-sham holder in position. Fig. 3 is a view of the bracket across the face of window or bedstead. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the brackets in position and looking from the top thereof. Fig. 5 is a view of the permanent collar upon the end of wire supporter, showing adjustable ball and ornamental tip thereon. Fig. 6 is a section of adj ustable clutch-ball used upon the opposite end of the wire supporter to adjust the length to the varied widths of windows and bed ends,
showing method of fastening wire supporter across the window or bedstead to the other.
bracket A, where it is placed in similar position in bracket A and the ball G adjusted by being turned down upon screw b provided until the supporter B is of the required tension to properly support the curtains or shams. In order to attain these results, the ends of the wire B must be secured in an adjustable manner. This I accomplish by providing a tube or collar of proper length and size to slip over the wire, and upon which collar I providea screw-thread corresponding with nut in balls G G. One end of the wire Bis passed through collar 61 and permanently soldered therein. The other end of the wire Bis passed through collar d and the end looped back into the collar, as shown in Fig. 6, and a small brad e or other suitable wedge inserted in the collar between the two sides of the loop and the wire drawn into the collar, thus making it possible to adjust the supporter to any desired length. This done the collars d and cl are placed in slots a a of brackets A and A and tips G and G screwed down upon collars d d into the countersunk seats F F until the proper tension is given to supporter B.
The object of the countersunk seats F F is to prevent the supporter from slipping out of the slots a a, the latter being on a horizontal plane with bracket when in position.
It is obvious that other forms of brackets or clutches might be substituted and yet the same results attained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a curtain and pillow-sham supporter, of a flexible cord or wire, adjustable collars or sleeves attached to its ends, adjusting and securin g balls or tips, and suitable brackets for the support of same, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a curtain and pillowsham supporter of a flexible cord or wire of suitable length to span the window or bed end, adjustable collars or sleeves through which the ends of the flexible supporter are passed and secured, the one permanently and the other adjustably, tension retaining balls or tips, and suitable brackets, which when attached to the window or bed end will resist the longitudinal tension strain of the supporter, and suitable to carry the weight of the curtains or pillow-Shams, all substantially as set forth.
ICO
3. The cornbination,in window-curtain and pillow-sham supporters, of a flexible cord or wire 13 or other suitable material, having adjustable collars or sleeves d (1 provided with a screw-thread and through which the ends of the supporter B are passed and fastened, adjusting balls or tips G G, provided with suitable nut to operate upon the thread of collars or sleeves d d, and thereby give supporter B sufficient tension to support the curtain or other fabric, brackets A A having a projecting right-angled foot or step to form a bearing against the window-frame suflicient to resist the tension strain of the supporter B when drawn into position across the window or bed, and provided with slots or notches a a in their outer extension suitable to hold the collars or sleeves cl d of supporter B in position, all substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in curtain and pillowrest when the supporter B is given proper tension, thus preventing the supporter from pulling off from the bracket, all substantially as set forth.
