DUPLEX ITUBE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 554,322, dated February 11, 1896. Approaan na March 9,1895. seria ro. 841,170. (ro model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. THORPE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residd ing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans 5: and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Duplex Tube, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a duplex 01' twin tube for general use where it i's desirable to have companion tubes extend in parallel relation; and the object of the improvement is to devise a tube of this character which can be cheaply and quickly constructed from sheet material, such as a ribbon or strip of paper, metal or any suitable material, the side portions of the said ribbon or strip being formed into the tubes and the edge portions being brought together and secured to the body of the strip or ribbon by substantially a single joint.
The improvement consists of the novel formation of tube, which hereinafter will be more fully set forth and claimed, and which is shown in the drawings hereto attached, in which-- j Figure 1 is a plan view of a length of tube constructed in accordance with the essence of this invention. Fig. 2 is a cross'section on the line y y of Fig. 1.
The tube comprises the Companion parts 1 and 2, which are independent tubes formed from a ribbon or single strip of sheet material, the side portions 3 and 4 of which are curved into the required form and have the edge portions 5 and 6 brought together and secured to the body by a single joint or seam 7.
The'strip or ribbon is defiected between its edges to form the crest or ridge 8, and the side portions are bent or curved to have the edges 5 and 6 come together at a point 9 and then spread so as to receive the angular portion of the part 8, the edges 5 and G and the crest or ridge 8 being secured so as to form a single seam or joint 7.
The tubes 1 and 2 may be of different relative size, and may have any desired Outline in cross=section without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The crest or ridge S extends to about a plane passing centrally through the two tubes and termnates in an acute angle, and the edges 5 and G are beveled and spread so as to receive the angle of the crest or ridge between them, thereby providing an extended surface for the formation of the joint or seam 7, and attaining a smooth interior finish to the tubes, while preserving a uniform outline.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isf- As an improvedarticle of manufacture, a twin or duplex tube formed from a strip or ribbon of sheet material having a medial longitudinal ridge or crest which termnates in an acute angle and in a plane passing centrally through the two completed tubes, said strip or ribbon having its side portions bent and curved so as to provide tubes, one on each side of the crest 01' ridge, the edge portions being beveled and brought together, and having the beveled portions spread and embracing the sides of the acute angle of the said ridge 01' crest, to which 'they are secured by a single joint or seam, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
i JOHN T. THORPE. Witnesses OsoAR R. MEYERs, GEORGE GRAvEs.
