HOSE-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,155, dated February 4, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY S. TEAL and JOHN W. CRATE, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Bands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements upon devices adapted to be so attached to a hose as to bind it upon the body of a metallic coupling; and its object is to simplify, render more effective, and cheapen appliances of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved band before its attachment to a hose. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the band primarily applied to a hose, but before pressure is placed upon the lever. Fig. 3 is a similar view, but showing the band fastened in place by the depression of the lever. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the hose with the invention fully applied. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing modified forms of our invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the respective views.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, entering into the body portion of the band are wire members 1, adapted, when forced to place, to be somewhat embedded in the yielding exterior of the hose, the substantially parallel members 1 being united at the points 2 to the strap 5, forming the remainder of the body, and hereinafter described. The lever 3 is fulcrumed on the bend 1 of the single wire forming the members 1, the lever having its under surface curved, so as when in place to rest concentrically with the hose. Near the inner end of the lever are provided wings 2, which are perforated to receive the bend 1; and, forward of the fulcrum, the lever is turned downwardly to form a pawl or catch 4, the edge of which is beveled and sharpened.
5 is a metallic strap of flexible or malleable metal, one end of which is secured in any suitable manner to the wire members 1. The strap 5, from a short distance back of its point of attachment to the wire members 1, is provided upon its inner or under face with depressions 5, which, as' shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, together form a rack, the upper line of which is raised above the body of the strap, the construction and operation being such that when the lever is first moved, preliminarily to being forced down or depressed to the fas tening position, the outer or front surface of the pawl or. catch 4 shall first engage the straight abrupt face of the tooth of the rack it is intended to engage; and, when the lever has been fully depressed, its pawl or catch 4 shall then rest firmly against the said tooth, the leverage of the pawl or catch against the face of the tooth having, during the depression of the lever, had the effect of drawing the wire members 1 and strap 6 tightly around the hose. As the strap 5 is tightened upon the hose, the longitudinal creases 5 produced upon the under side of the strap, and which are in line with the wire members 1, press into and become embedded in the flexible hose, thus greatly aiding in the work of securing the band thereon, and the hose upon the body of the coupling, which latter is usually provided with annular ribs. The lever 3 having been pushed down to its lowest position, by which action the strap 5 and wire members 1 are drawn tightly around the hose, and the longitudinal creases 5 caused to forcibly indent the flexible surface thereof, the ears 6, formed upon the end of the strap 5 to which the wire members 1 are attached, are to be turned or bent over upon the outer end of the lever, the work of securing the device upon the hose-band being thus completed. The opposite end of the strap 5 is widened, and the ears 6 so formed are turned up, as shown, to provide guides for keeping the wire members, when the device is closed upon the hose, in the longitudinal creases 5", thus preserving an equal and properly distributed pressure upon the hose.
In Fig. 5 a modification is shown in which the rack is so formed upon the strap 5 that the pawl or catch 4. of the lever shall fit against a straight or abrupt face sunk belowthe main body of the strap instead of above, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:. Here the projections 5, produced on the under side of the strap by the formation of the rack, press into and become embedded in the hose and assist in securing it around the body of the coupling, they having substantially the function of the longitudinal creases 5 In Fig. 6 is shown a further modification, in which, instead of the formation of a rack upon the strap 5, whether above or below its outer surface, a double series of perforations 8 are provided in the strap, which act in connection with a pair of catches 4, extending from the lever forward of its fulcrum, the operation being the same as hereinabove described.
A salient point of improvement in this invention is in the arranging of the pawl or catch of the lever forward of its fulcrum, instead of in the rear thereof, while in the form of our invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, there is further improvement in the employment of a racked strap, whereby the catch or engaging-point of the lever is afforded ample area of hold.
A further point of improvement consists in producing the creases or projections upon the under side of the strap, which, as the strap is drawn around the hose, become embedded in its flexible surface, thus concentrating the pressure of the strap and producing substantially the same effect as though the wires were made to completely encircle the hose.
A still further advantage, which applies to all the forms in which our invention is here illustrated and described, consists in the widening of the outer end of the strap 5 and turning up the cars so produced, so as to provide guides for the wire members.
Having described our invention, we claim 1. The combination, in a flexible hose-band, of a lever at one end thereof provided near its fulcrum with wings, and having, forward of its fulcrum, a pawl or catch, and a strap, attached to the end of the band opposite to that supporting the lever, adapted for engagem ent with the pawl or catch of said lever, said strap havingits outer end widened to form upturned ears, substantially as set forth.
2. In a flexible hose-band, a body consisting of wire members and a strap, combined with a lever fulcrumed upon the body and having an operative pawl or catch, the strap portion of the body being provided with a rack for co-operation with the pawl or catch of the lever, an outer and widened end to form upturned ears, and ears adapted to be turned or bent over upon the outer end of said lever when depressed, substantially as set forth.
3. In a hose-band, a flexible body consisting of wire members and a strap, combined with a lever fulcrumed on the body and having a pawl or catch, said strap having creases or corrugations, in the lines of the wire members, adapted to receive said wire members and to be embedded by them in the hose, and means for engaging with the pawl or catch of the lever, substantially as set forth.
4. In ahose-band, a flexible body consisting of wire members and a strap, combined with a lever fulcrumed on the body and having a pawl or catch, said strap being indented to form on one side thereof depressions to receive the pawl or catch of the lever and on the other side projections to be embedded in the hose, substantially as set forth.
