F. BRINKER BAIL HANDLE AND METHCD OF ATTACHING THESAME Filed Nov. 8, 1926 am I Fe'soa/e/ c/r BR/N/f ER d b 7 Y Patented Jan. 29, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK BRINKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL LEAD COM- PANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORIORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BAIL HANDLE AND METHOD OF ATTAGHING THE SAME.
Application filed November 8, 1926. Serial No. 146,988.
This invention pertains to bail handles for pails and the like and to a method for applying the same.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an ear for attaching the bail to a pail, which will be simple and cheap to construct and which may be securely attached to the pail.
Another object is to provide a novel method for attaching an ear to a pail.
Further objects will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a pail embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a partial side view, showing the pail before completion and the relation of the bail ear thereto; and
Figure 3 is a front view of Figure 2.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 designates the body of the pail and 2 the bail handle. The body 1 may be formed of pressed sheet metal or other suitable material and is provided at its top edge with a rolled or curled edge 3 as is usual in the construction of such )itllS. I In forming the body 1 and before rolling the edge 3, said edge is slotted at diametrically opposite points as indicated at 4 in FigureQ. A bail ear 5 is formed of stout wire or similar material so as to provide a loop 6 adapted to receive the end of the bail 2 and lateral extensions 7. The extensions 7 are curved to conform to the curvature of the body 1 at the point where the ear is applied. In addition to such curvature, however, these extensions are deflected downwardly, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, so as to have a warped or distorted form, with their outer ends lower than the portions adjacent the loop 6. When the top edge 3 is rolled, the ears are first applied, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3, and then the rolling operation is carried out in such a way as to include the extensions 7 within the roll 3, as indicated in Figure 1.
On account of the warped form of the extensions 7, the rolling operation will draw these extensions upwardly into the roll, thereby forcing the loop 6 downwardly against the body of the pail, as indicated in dotted lines 1n Figure 3. This operation crowds the loop 6 forcibly against the body of the pail so as to render it perfectly rigid and to provide against any looseness or spring when a load is being carried in the pail. At the same time the bottom of the notch 4 bears on the top of the loop 6 to assist in forcing it down. 1
considerable load may be secured to the pail in such a manner as to be perfectly rigid and unyielding.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of this invention; it is to be understood therefore that this invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.
Having thus described the invention,.what is claimed is:
1. A pail, comprising, a body having a rolled top edge, a bail ear having a warped extension rolled in said edge, and a bail engaging said ear.
2. The method of attaching bail ears to pails and the like, comprising, forming the ear with a warped extension, and rolling said extension into the pail edge.
3. The method of attaching bail ears to pails and the like, comprising, forming the ear with a downwardly deflected extension, and rolling said extension into the pail edge, whereby the ear is forced down against the pail body. 1
4:. A pail comprising, a body having a rolled top edge and a bail ear of wire secured in the roll of said edge and formed into a loop, said wire extending downwardly, outwardly and upwardly to form said 100p, said 100p having an angular projection extending downwardly therefrom into close proximity 5 with said pail body thereby to provide a nester.
5. A pail, comprising, a body having a rolled top edge, a bail ear havin a loop formed with a downwardly extending tip, means whereby said tip is pressed against said body, and a bail engaging said ears.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature this 20th day of September, 1926.
FREDERICK BRINKER.
