UNiTnn S'rarns ATENT JAMES E. JOHNSON, OF PERRY, NEW YORK.
FENCE TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,530, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed September 1, 1900. Serial No. 28,803. (No model.)
To all whom, it incty concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have in vented new and useful Im provements in Fence-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fence-ties; and its primary object is to provide a device adapted to securely bind the uprights of a fence to the wires thereof without denting or otherwise inarring or disfiguring the wire.
A further object is to provide a durable tie of simple construction, which may be readily applied and which when once placed in position cannot slip.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, defined in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a tie in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the body of the tie, and Fig. 4 is a view of a blank before being bent into the body.
Referring to the said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is an upright of a fence, which may be formed of stiff wire or pipe. Fitted This body is struck up from a single blank, as shown in Fig. 4, and has parallel arms 3 extending from one end thereof, while the opposite end is recessed at 4. Said body is then bent transversely at a point midway between the arms and recess, and the arms 3 are turned inward or hooked, as shown at 5. The wire of the fence is placed within the tie, so as to lie therein at the side farthest removed from the arms 3. The arms of the tie are then placed at opposite sides of the upright 1, causing the same to cont-act with the wire, as shown in Fig. 2. A small metal wedge 6 is then forced into the hooks 5, and the edge -thereof will bind upon the upright and force the same firmly against the wire of the fence. The parts will thus be held firmly in position. Should an extremely small wire be used, two wedges can be employed; but the one wedge will adapt itself to several sizes of wire. By this construction it will be seen that the device does not kink the wire or otherwise mar it. The same can be used at any desired distance apart and can be employed upon uprights of any form. As the wire does not contact with the wedge, said wedge cannot be loosened by pressure upon the wire. The device is simple and durable and securely binds the parts when once in position.
In the foregoing description I have shown what appears to be the very best form of invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall within the scope of myinvention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A fence-tie comprising a body struck up from a single strip of metal, a recurved end thereto having a recess in its edge, parallel arms to the body at the opposite end thereof and bent upon themselves, and a wedge.
2. A fence-tie comprising a body formed in a single strip of metal, an inwardly-bent end thereto having a recess in its edge, parallel arms at the opposite end of the body bent upon themselves, said arms lying out of vertical alinement with, the recess, and a wedge.
3. The combination with an upright; of a tie formed in a single strip of metal, an end thereto bent inward and having a recess in its edge adapted to receive theupright, parallel arms extending from the remaining end of the tie and adapted to lie at opposite sides of the upright, inwardly-turned ends to the arms, a wire within the tie and between the upright and the inwardly-curved end of the tie, and a wedge within the curved arms adapted to bindthe upright against the wire.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
