Description

D. MoGUNE. HOSE SPANNBR No. 469,487. Patented Feb. 23,1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MtIOUNE, OF ASHLAND, WVISCONSIN.
HOSE-SPANNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,487, dated February 23, 1892.
Application filed August 4, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID MOCUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose-Spanners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hose-spanners; and the object of my improvement is to furnish the means by which a coupling of hose can be effected with greater ease and in a shorter time than it could be effected without my improvement. Heretofore hosespanners have loosely fitted the coupler-post and in turning the coupler-screw will fall from position unless held in place by the hand.
By means of my improvement the spanner remains in place upon the coupler without any external support. I attain this object by the construction as illustrated in the-accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the hosespannerin position upon the coupler. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the hose-spanner. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4. isa vertical section of the tongue indicated at a, Fig. 1.
Similarletters refertosimilar parts throughout the several figures.
d is the body of the machine, constructed, preferably, of steel and fashioned so as to present a conveniently-shaped handle at one extremity and at the other bent into an arc f to fit the curved surface of the coupler. The curved portion f is split or opened from the heel to the extremity to accommodate the tongue a, which is swunginthe opening upon the rivet 1). Both the extremity of the curved portion and the opening it contains are enlarged to a sufficient size to admit of the coupler-post forming the leverage for turning the coupler-screw. The tongue a is beveled and grooved at the extremity It, so as to snugly fit a corresponding bevel in the split in which it swings and to closely engage the coupler-post. The spring a, which is attached to the handle at e, acts upon the tongue at at the point 'i, keeping the other extremity of the tongue snugly in'place and when in use firmly pressed against the coupler-post. The enlargement of the split in the extremity of the curved portion f, in conjunction with the exopening slightly smaller than the diameter of the coupling-post, so as to insure close coir tact with the tongue. 7
In using the hose spanner the operator grasps the handle (1, presses with the thumb upon the flattened extremity of the tongue at j, which relieves the pressure ofthe spring 0, raises the end h, and permits theintroduction of the coupler-post into the opening. The pressure upon the springis then released and the spanner is firmly fixed in position upon the coupler ready for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a hose-spanner, of a tongue at, swung within the split arc f upon the rivet b, and the spring 0, acting in conjunction therewith, substantially as described.
