I U ITED STATES Patented April 26, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
CLAMP OR STOP-COCK FOR FLEXIBLE TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,449, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed November 13, 1903. Serial No. 181,047. (No model.)
To all whom, it uuty concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN L. J ERALps, of New Rochelle, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps or Stop- Cocks for Flexible Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of my improved device, showing it applied to a flexible tube; Fig. 2, a corresponding view showing the tube constricted; Fig. 3, a detached plan view of the device; Fig. 4, a view thereof in end elevation; Fig. 5, a detached view, in side elevation, of the finger-piece; Fig. 6, a sectional view thereof on the line a b of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 a broken view showing another mode of attaching the finger-piece to the body or frame.
My invention relates to an improvement in clamps or stop-cocks for flexible tubes, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture a simple and effective device constructed with particular reference to being conveniently operated by one hand.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a clamp or stop-cock having. certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out inthe claims.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a sheet-metal body or frame made in one piece and comprising a lower reach 2, an upper reach 3, and a spring-bow 4, uniting the two reaches and formed with a central opening 5 for the passage through the frame or body of a tube 6, as shown in Figs. land 2. The lower reach 2 is transversely struck up to form an upwardly-extending seat 7 while the upper reach 3 is bent to form an oppositely-arranged downwardly-extending compression-arm 8, which as the two reaches are brought together coacts with the seat 7 in pinching the tube, as shown in Fig. 2, to regulate or to entirely stop the passage of water or other fluid through it. For the purpose of holding the arm 8 down upon the tube the lower reach is formed with two laterally-an ranged integral upright arms 9, corresponding to each other and each formed with a large clearance-opening 10, the rear wall of which is provided with ratchet-teeth 11, which are engaged by lugs 12, formed upon the lower ends of the twdpawl-like arms 13 of a fingerpiece 14, located upon the free end of the upper reach, which is bent to form a sleeve or socket 15, receiving trunnions 16, struck inward from the said arms and entering the opposite ends of the said socket. It will be apparent that by pressing down upon the outer end of the finger-piece 14 the upper reach 3 will be sprung downward and that the lugs 12 of the arms13 will ride downward over the teeth 11. The extent to which the fingerpiece is thus operated will depend upon the amount of which it is desired to constrict the tube 6. On the other hand, by lightly pressing down upon the rear'end of the finger-piece 14 the same will be swung upon its pivot and its lugs 12 disengaged from the teeth, leaving the spring-bow 4 free to act to lift the upper reach into its normal or unsprung position in which it is shown in Fig. l. This lifting action will of course be assisted by the effort ofthe tube to recover its normal form.
It'is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes from the particular construction shown and described may be made. Thus instead of forming the finger piece with integral trunnions 16 I may pivotally mount it upon the body or frame by means of a pivot 17 passing through the upper ends of the arms 13 of the finger-piece and through the sleeve or socket 15 of the upper reach 8 0f the frame or body, as shown in Fig. 7 I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but hold myself at liberty to make such variations therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. 7 r
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clamp or stop-cock for flexible tubes, having a frame or body comprising two reaches adapted to have a flexfole tube passed between them and shaped to compress it when they are moved toward each other, one of the said reaches being furnished with two laterallyarranged arms, and the other with a fingerpiece pivotally mounted upon it and adapted to engage with the said arms for holding the two reaches in their tube-compressing positions.
2. A clamp or stop-cock for flexible tubes, having a frame or body comprising two reaches adapted to have a flexible tube passed between them and shaped to compress it when they are moved toward each other, and one reach having two laterally-arranged arms formed with clearance openings the rear walls of which are provided with teeth, and the other reach being furnished with a finger-piece located at its free end and having arms adapted to be' engaged with the said teeth for holding the two reaches in their tube-compressing positions.
3. In aclamp or stop-cock for flexible tubes,
the combination with a frame made from a single piece of sheet metal and comprising an upper reach, a lower reach and a' spring-bow between them, the lower reach being formed with two upwardly-extending arms having clearance-openings the rear walls of which are provided with ratchet-teeth. and the upper reach being formed with a downwardly-extending compression-arm; of a finger-piece located upon the free end of the upper reach and formed with depending pawl-like arms furnished with lugs entering the said clearance-slots and adapted to engage with the said teeth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the-presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ORRIN L. JERALDS.
