Be it known that I, CiiAnLns NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mentor, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in vVire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wire-stretchers of the type usually employed in constructing wire fences and similar structures, and has special reference to a simple and practical stretching implement of this character.

To this end the invention contemplates a wire-stretching device comprising means for enabling the operator to exert a straight stretching pull upon the wire, at the same time being so constructed as to maintain alirm nonslipping grip upon the wire during the stretching operation and also adapting itself freely to any angle, whereby the operator can pull from any desirable position.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction,com bination, and arrangement of parts, as herein fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

The essential features involved in the invention in the construction of the wire-grip and its manner of connection with the other parts are susceptible to some structural change without departing from the scope of the invention; but the preferred construction is shown in the accompanying drawings,in which the ligure is a perspective view of a complete wire-stretcher embodying the present invention and shown in its applied position.

In carrying out the invention a distinguishing feature thereof resides in the speciallyconstructed wire-grip, (designated by the numeral 1.) This wire-grip essentially consists of an open-link body having at one end the reinforcing-terminal 2, rigidly united by welding or otherwise to one end of the grip-linger From its rigid end portion united to the terminals 2 the finger 3 is deflected. outwardly from the main body portion of the grip to provide a convergent pocket or interval, within which the wire to be stretched is placed, so that when endwise pulling pressure is exert ed upon the grip the wire becomes firmly and tightly wedged behind the linger and is posi tively prevented from slipping during the stretching operation.

One end of the grip-body isloosely engaged in the eye 4 of one of the members of a self-adjusting swivel 5, the other member of which swivel is formed with an eye 6, which loosely receives one end of the coupling-link 7, the other end of which link loosely engages in the perforations 8 of the parallel ear members 9 of the handle-clip 10.

The handle-clip 10 preferably consists of a strip of sheet metal bent to a circular form, with the oifstanding ears 9, and is designed to receive and embrace a handle 11, which may be conveniently gripped at each side of the clip to enable the operator to exert a strong pull upon the wire.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, action, and many advantages of the herein-described wire-stretcher will be readily apparent without further description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A Wire-stretcher comprising a wire-grip consisting of a wire-grip body having a longitudinally-disposed outwardly-deflected griplinger united with one end of the body and providing a wedging grip for the wire, a selfadjusting swivel having one member connected with said wi re-gri p, and a handle-clip having a loose link connection with the other member of the swivel.
