FASTENING DEVICE. AYPLIOATION FILED MAR. 16, 1908.

SEATON GREENLEAF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug.- 24, 1909.
Application filed March 16, 1908. Serial N 0. 421,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GREENLEAF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fastening Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and effective links for fastening ropes, straps or the like, the construction and arrangement of the link being such that a rope attached thereto and looped upon itself may readily be adjusted within said link and held in such adjustment under strain, the device being especially applicable to guy-ropes, hammock-suspenders, halters, etc. The particular advantage of this link lies in the fact that its peculiar formation is such that when in use the rope is prevented from becoming disengaged therefrom in all directions, while at the same time with a slight slackening of said rope, it can be readily inserted or disengaged from said link, the above results being due primarily to a centrally disposed hooked tongue, the end of which tongue extends beyond the plane of the body of the aforesaid link and Within the width of same.
The invention therefore consists in various details of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter fully set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the link with a rope attached thereto in position thereon; and Fig. 2, is a plan View of said link.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents an eye for permanent attachment of a ropeend, the eye constituting a longitudinal extension of a one-piece metallic link. The link proper is provided with semicircular end sections B, B, which merge into and are connected by a single approximately straight side-bar C. Thesemicircular end-sections B, B, opposite the side-bar C terminate in abrupt radially disposed faces D, thereby forming an opening upon this side of the link, which opening is equal to approximately three quarters of the internal length of the link, the internal diameter of said semicircular ends being approximately equal to the diameter of the rope to be used in connection with said link.
A centrally disposed shank E projects from the side-bar C, the shank being at a right-angle to said bar and terminating in an upwardly curved tongue F, which tongue projects beyond the plane of the link body, the length of said tongue being such that it is entirely within the width of the link. A rope G is shown permanently attached to the eye A of the link, and after being so attached it is looped upon itself, the return end of the loop being. fitted into the open link by passing the same under both semicircular end-sections, B, B and over the shank portion of the tongue. The tongue as stated is of such height above the plane of link as to fully guard said rope from becoming accidentally displaced therefrom, and at the same time the position of its shank portion with relation to the ends of the link insures suflicient kink in the aforesaid rope to prevent the same from slipping. The rope end which passes through the link is subjected to strain in opposition to its looped end, and hence when the rope is slacked from either end the link may be readily adjusted to any desired position, whereby the loop therein is either lengthened or shortened as the case may require.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the link is so formed as to constitute a pair of. bayonet slots, the entire throat-portions of which slots are of a width equal to the width of the right-angle portion thereof, whereby a rope which is capable of a snu fit within the link can readily be inserted through the throat-portion, and when adjusted in position the rope is thus snugly held in all directions and insured against slipping.
I claim:
A fastening-link comprising a straight side-bar section, having an approximately straight sided shank extending from the straight side bar section midway of its length, whereby a double right-angle is formed upon opposite sides of the tongue,
the end of said tongue being extended above ends and the straight side-bar, whereby the plane of the link, and the side-bar secoppositely disposed bayonet slots are formed tion being provided with opposltely disin connection With said tongue.
posed curved portions terminating adjacent GEORGE SEATON GREENLEAF. to the tongue sides with an abrupt flattened Witnesses: end at a distance from said tongue approxi- HOBE S. GREENLEAF,
mately equal to the distance between said HINE T. RANORI'.
