CABLE CLAMP.

WITNESSES INVENTO R IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX WACHTEL, OF DONORA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CABLE-CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX VvAOI-ITEL, a resident of Donora, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a clamp for drawing or pulling electric cables, etc., wherein a powerful gripping action is obtained from the pulling force imparted to the clamp without bending or kinking the cable.
In conduit and similar work the line of the pulling force is necessarily at one side of the cable, and an objection to at least some clamps heretofore proposed is that they tend to kink or bend the cable toward or into the line of draft, thereby injuring the cable and making thework less efficient. With my invention the cable and the draft means are maintained in substantially parallel relation. The grip or hold of cable clamps is frequently not sufficient to prevent slipping, an objection which I effectively overcome with the improved clamp.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the clamp in position on a cable when drawing or pulling the same, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of the lower carrier and the jaw and hooks pivoted thereto. Figs. 4 and 5 are details of the removable Referring to the drawings, the cable A is adapted to be embraced by the opposed jaws 2 and 3 of substantially semi-circular section, the cable engaging the face of each jaw being formed with suitable projections that so grip the cable as to prevent slipping, The projections may take any desired form, in. the adaptation here shown they consist of the inclined ribs 4, and teeth-like projections 4'.
The clamp carrier consists of body 5, and extending therefrom is tongue 6 to which a pulling line or other draft means 7 is connected, and projecting from body 5 in the opposite direction are the separated arms 8, apertured to receive bolt 9 secured by cotters 9.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 687,394.
With the parts assembled for pulling a cable, as in Fig. 1, hooks 11 are disposed transversely of the line of draft, and bolt 9 and trunnions 12 are as nearly as possible in a common plane substantially at right angles to the draft line and t0 the axis of the cable. The pulling force is transmitted through hooks 11 to jaw 3 in a manner which draws said jaw toward jaw 2, the clamping hold increasing with the pull as will be understood. With the hooks piv oted to the carrier, and with the trunnions and the hook pivots alining with each other as nearly as possible transversely of the cable, the latter is firmly gripped and caused to move in a direction substantially parallel with the line of pull, there being no undue tendency to bend or kink the cable into the line of draft.
While the clamp is designed especially for electric cable use, it is well adapted for other forms of cables, and for pulling rods, pipe, etc.
I claim 1. In a cable clamp, the combination of opposed jaws, connecting devices pivotally secured to the jaws between their ends, and a draft-imparting device pivotally secured to one of the jaws concentrically with the pivotal union between said jaw and the connecting devices.
2. In a cable clamp, opposed gripping jaws, a carrier, and devices for connecting said jaws, said carrier, devices and one of the jaws having a pivot common thereto to permit relative pivotal movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAX WACI-ITEL.
