DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND SPLIOING ROPES.
No. 372,970. Patented Nov. 8, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO B. DAVIES, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND SPLICING ROPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,970,dated November 8, 1887,
- Application filed March 25, 1887. sci-m1 No. 232,355. ("No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO B. DAVIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Holding and Splicing Ropes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to the improvement of devices for holding and splicing ropes used by persons employed in removing wreckage from railroad-tracks, but may be utilized for other purposes.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a strong, simple, and effective device of the class above mentioned,so constructed as to admit of the end of a rope being readily and firmly secured thereto without tying or knotting the rope; second, to so construct said device as to admit ofits being readily and effectively secured to a similar device or to objects which it is desired to displace; third, to so construct said rope-holding device as to cause its hold on the rope to be tightened by strain upon the latter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in WlllCll- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a partial side view showing the position of the ropeholding portion of my device when in use. Fig. 4. is an elevation taken at right angles with Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is atransverse section taken on line a; 00 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
a represents a short cylindrical block having a central horizontal hole therethrough, and
two perforated l ugs, a, projecting, respectively, from opposite sides thereof. Loosely pivoted within the central hole of the block a is the shank of a forwardly-projecting hook, I), havend of said block.
Loosely-pivoted to each of the lugs a, by means of a pin, 0, is the forward end'of an arm, a. Each of these armsc, extending obliquely, rearwardly, and outwardly, is loosely pivoted, by means of a pin, 0, at its rear end, to the inner sides of the arms cl, with which they are formed, at about the middle of their length, are short arms d each of which is provided with an enlarged head, d having a concave face, the latter being preferably screw-threaded or roughened for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
The lower pivoted portions of the arms 11 may be provided each with a rearwardly-extending arm, 9, which, when the heads (1 are closed together, is parallel with and a short distance from the lower portion of the tube e.
Each of these arms 9 is provided at its lower end with a screw-hole, within which may be inserted and made to engage with the threads thereof a set-screw, h.
The end of arope having been forced through the tube 6 from the rear end thereof its projecting end may be firmly clamped between the concave roughened faces of the heads (1 of the arms d by fixing the hook I) to any desired object and pulling on the rope, thus causing the arms d to be drawn rearwardly, which, as will readily be seen, will operate to draw the clamping-heads of the arms d toward each other. i
By the above-described operation it will be seen that an increase of strain upon the rope will cause the clampingheads to tighten their hold thereon, and when it is desired to retain the rope in this position, the set-screws h may be turned until their inner ends bear against the tube 0, thus holding the parts rigidly in place.
In case it is desired to form a splice or coupling between the ends of a broken rope, one of the above-described devices may be secured, as described, to each of the ropes and the hooks b made to engage one with the other.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters 1), and arms 0, with the pivoted arms d, having Patent, isextensions 9, set-screws h, and arms cl", having 1. In arope-holding device, the combination elai'nping-heads d, and the pivoted connectingof the block a, having pivoted thereto the hook piece having central tube, a, substantially as 5 b, and arms 0, with the pivoted arms (I, having and for the purpose specified.
arms d, having clamping-heads (Z and the 4 a pivoted connecting-piece having central tube, LORENZO DAVIES" o e, substantially as and for the purpose specified. \Vitnesses:
2. Inarope-holding device, the combination E. G. IRVINE, 10 of the block a, having pivoted thereto the hook C. B. CURRIER.
