HAT-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,717, dated January 28, 1896. Application filed May 15, 1895. Serial No. 549,438. (No model.)

T0 on whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMMA MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented anew and useful Hat or Bonnet Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

- My invention relates to hat or bonnetfastenings; and it consists of a hair-penetrating bar, said bar having at each end elastic means provided with fasteners for detachably engaging the hat or bonnet; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a simple and effective means whereby the hat or bonnet is secured to the head; second, to'afford an easy method of fastening or unfastening the hat or bonnet, freed from the danger, accompanying'the use of the ordinary hat-pin, of injuring the head, and, third, to afford a hat or bonnet fastener Which is ornamental in appearance. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear View of the Wearers head, showing the fastening device in place. Fig.

' 2 is top view of the bar which is Worn in the hair. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the bar. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views of the buckle or ring, to be slipped over the end of the bar, with elastic cords or wires.

The bar or spear A is passed through the back hair beneath the hat or bonnet so that the two ends protrude. The ends, G of the cords or wires F are permanently secured by any suitable means to the inside of the rim or crown of the hat or bonnet on either side, and one of the buckles or rings 0, to each of which a set of said cords or wires are attached at the shank D, is slipped over each end of the bar A. The points or shoulders E on the inside of the buckle or ring-O, being inserted in the holes or indentations B of said bar, serve, in combination with the elastic cords and wires F, to hold the buckle or ring 0 firmly in place.

The bar or spearA may be made of any suit able material in any suitable ornamental shape and may be worn in the hair as would be worn an ordinary comb or hair-pin as part of the usual toilet. When the hat or bonnet is then placed upon the head, hooks or buckles or rings 0, or similar suitable devices, are slipped over or onto the ends of the bar A, and in case of buckles or rings the points or shoulders E allowed to drop into the holes or indentations B, thus holding the hat or bonnet securely in place.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A hat-fastener comprising a hair-penetrating bar, said bar having at each end elastic means provided with fasteners for detachably engaging the hat, substantiallyas described.
