LAMP CHIMNBY HOLDER.
No. 546,861. l Patentedsept. 24, 1895.
Arnim* LESLIE H. LEIGHTON, OF GLENS FALLS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO A. MOT'I BAILEY, OF TIOONDEROGA, NEW' YORK.
LAlVlP-CHIVINY HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,861, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed March 21J 1 S 9 5.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE H. LEIeHToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, Warren county, New York, have in- Ivented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved. lamp-chimney holder for use principally in stores or where lamp-chimneys are kept in quantity.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my device with one lamp-chimney only held therein; and Fig. 2, a plan view of the top of my device, showing the cavities in the rail and a cross-section of one of the chimneys held in place thereon.
The numeral l shows the side rails of my device, which are preferably formed of wood and are hollowed out or dished, as shown at 3, to receive the curvature of the lamp-chimney, the numeral 2 showing the connectingbars, by which a number of rails may be connected together.
At 4 will be seen a wire, preferably looped at its top in the form of a U, and at its lower end it is coiled, as seen at 5, the coils 5 giving the requisite amount of resilience, causing the loop 4 to press backward or against the rail 1 when a chimney is not in engagement therewith.
6 shows a lamp-chimney securely held by my device, and 7 screw-eyes, by which the frame may be suspended from the ceiling or otherwise hung in position.
The operation is as follows: It being my desire to provide a means whereby lampchimneys may be secured removably in posi- Serial No. 542,586. (No model.)
tion, so they cannot be thrown down and broken, and yet so that they can be easily removed when desired, I take any ordinary lamp-chimney and pass the lower or larger end preferably behind the wire spring 4 and in front of the rail 1, so that the wire spring 4 will enter the chimney, and this spring being arranged, on account of the resilience of the material of which itis made, to press backward or against the rail l the chimney 6 is pressed against the rail, and the curvature thereof lies in the hollowed-out portion 3, and the chimney is securely held in position. When it is desirable, as it may be when large forms of my device are used, to have some of the chimneys hang downward instead of standing upright, as shown, the springs 4 may be made to project downward, and a chimney entered between them and the rail 1 will be securely held and cannot drop out therefrom.
For securing lamp-chimneys in position in stores this device is exceedingly useful, as the chimneys when once in position will remain there until removed designedly and cannot rattle or move, and therefore all liability to breakage is overcome.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A. lamp chimney holder consisting of a main framework of rails or stringers, said rails having recesses or hollows in their surfaces disposed at intervals and arranged to receive and practically conform to the outer surface of the lamp chimney and having a pressure device arranged to enter the chimney and press against its inner surface and force the chimney into the recess in the rail and retain it there substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LESLIE H. LEIGHTON. Witnesses:
W. M. BROWN, J. F. HARRIS.
