SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,587, dated September 17, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DILLON, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Virginia, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have'invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Pegging-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the'in vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to pegging-jacks for supporting boots and shoes while being pegged; and its object isto provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination ofparts, hereinafter fnlly described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a pegging-jack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailview of the upper part of the standard with the last removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the last. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views showing the last in dilferent positions on the standard. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line as :10, Fig. 3. r

In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a base, and 2 a standard secured thereto, formed with vertical ribs 3 at opposite sides. The upper end of this standard is inclined and is cut away at each end, forming a tongue 4.. The lower end of this tongue is cut away at an angle, forming a lug 5, while the other end of the tongue is formed with a straight shoulder 6. The standard below the said lug is also provided with an angular reof a boot or shoe and provided with a central rectangular opening 12, with a recess 13 at the heel end thereof. This last near its edge on each side is formed with a concave or depression 14.

engaging with the recess 13 at the heel end "of the slot. The angle of the last can be varied by engaging the other lug with said recess. To use the last with a left boot or shoe, it is removed from the standard and inverted and then again connected therewith. The purpose of the concave or depression at the edges of the last is to turn up the nails which are to be clinched and prevent them from injuring the upper.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with the standard formed with a tongue and with lugs and shoulders, of the removable and invertible last having an aperture therein, and a recess at the rear end of said slot; substantially as described.
