SHOE-CALK. 7
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 22, 1908.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Serial No. 468,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SAMUEL KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davis, in the county of Tucker and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Calk, of which the following is a sIpeoification.
t is the object of the present invention to provide an improved form of shoe calk, and more particularly a calk which is especially well adapted for application to rubber boots or shoes, such as are worn by lumbermen, and the novelty of the invention resides in the feature of so constructing the calks that when applied to the sole of a rubber shoe or boot they will not be liable to become torn therefrom, and will be so held as to be at all times efiective.
A further object of the invention is to increase the base area of the calks without materially increasing their weight or cost of manufacture, this being accomplished preferably by so forming the clenching or attaching prongs of the calks that they will in themselves, when clenched to the sole of the shoe or boot, afford additional base area.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one of the calks embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through a portion of a shoe sole showing the manner of applying the calk thereto, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view in detail through the calk. Fig. 4 is a similar view but taken in a horizontal plane through one of the attaching prongs of the calk. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a slightly modified form of calk.
As shown in the drawings, the calk embodying the invention is comprised of a head 7 which may be in the nature of a rectangular flat faced plate or disk, as indicated in the first four figures of the drawings, or may be of skeleton form as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In either of them, the head 7 is formed upon one face, which is the un der face after the calk has been properly applied to a boot or shoe, with a spur 8 which is preferably conical in form and sharply pointed and projects downwardly axially from the said head, the said spur being preferably formed of material or metal which may be hardened to a high degree, but being integral with the head 7 which is preferably of the same material although not hardened, as however it might be if found expedient. Upon the other face of the head 7, at each corner of the said head, there is formed a clenching or attaching rong 9 and each of these prongs has two p fane faces 10 and a face 11 which is convex from side to side, or in other words from edge to edge of the first mentioned faces. As clearly shown in the drawings, the faces 10 of the calk extend in planes at right angles with respect to the plane of the head 7, whereas the face 11 inclines toward the apex of the respective prong, so that the prongs are gradually tapered from their ends which are integral with the head 7 to their extremities, and as will be observed from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawings, the face 11 of each prong, is convexed also longitudinally of the prongs from a point adjacent the extremity thereof to the said extremity. When the device is being applied to the sole of a boot or shoe, the boot or shoe being of course placed upon the usual last, the prongs will be turned over each in a direction away from the others, and in this manner additional base area will be afforded the spurs 8, so that they will not be likely to turn or have any movement whatsoever independently of the shoe.
From the foregoing description of the invention, it will be seen that there is provided a calk which may be readily and quickly ap lied to the ordinary rubber shoe or boot an which is particularly well adapted for application to that class of boots or shoes which are worn by lumbermen inasmuch as a maximum base area is secured without incurring additional weight.
What is claimed is 1. As an article of manufacture, a shoe calk comprising a head having one side toothed, and a plurality of attaching prongs projecting from the other side thereof, each of the said prongs having two plane faces and a third face convex from side to side and substantially from end to end.
2. As an article of manufacture, a shoe calk comprising a head having one side toothed, and a plurality of attaching prongs projecting from the other side thereof, each of the said prongs having two plane faces disposed at right angles and a third face convex from side to side and substantially from end to end, the last mentioned faces of the prongs being presented toward a common center and the edge of each prong formed between the two plane faces thereof extend- 5 ing at right angles from the face of the head upon which the prongs are formed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES SAlVIUEL KERR.
