SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,566, dated September 17, 1895.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ANDREW VERNON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Owen Sound, in the county of Grey and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved N apkin-Holder, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved napkin-holder, which is simple and durable in construction, arranged to securely hold a napkin in place, and to permit the wearer to readily apply the holder on a collar or neekband.
The invention consists principally of a back plate, formed on its upper end with rearwardly-extending hooks, adapted for engagement with acollar or neckband, the said back plate being formed at its ends with a doubled-up clamping-band to securely hold a napkin in position.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, andthen pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improvement.
The improved napkin-holder is provided with a body or back plate A, formed at or near its middle with an upward extension A, formed into one or more hooks A for conveniently supporting the holder from a collar or neckband. 'In the back plateA is formed a recess A extending upwardly into the extension A, as is plainly indicated in Figs. 1
and 2. The ends of the back plate A are formed with downwardly-extending extensions A each formed into a loop A having its front end extending upwardly, and the two upper ends of the loops are connected with each other by a clamping-plate A reaching in front of the back plate A. Now it will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the upper end of the recess A projects over the top edge of the clamping-plate A so that one end of the napkin can be passed through the front end of the said recess A and drawn rearwardly a distance of four or five inches, at the same time permitting of spreading the sides 5 of the napkin into the space between the back plate A and the clamping-plate A, to securely hold the napkin in position on the holder, and also to spread the sides thereof a suitable distance from shoulder to shoulder, to cause the 6s napkin to fully cover and protect the front of the wearers dress.
The back plate A, as well as the clamp A are curved to conform as near as possible to the shape of a collar or neckband, to readily fit the same. The upper edge of the clamping-plate A is preferably scalloped, as indicated in Fig. 1.
