Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EBEN HAYES JAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, county of WilLand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to napkin-holders, that is to devices for holding a napkin in front of a child or others while at the table.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned which shall be of simple construction and of low cost to manufacture.

A further object of my invention is to provide a napkin-holder as mentioned which shall securely clamp the napkin without danger of tearing the same.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

In carrying out myinvention, I form the device of a single piece of spring wire. This is first bent into an oval ring or loop of proper size and open at the back. The ends of the wireare then bent forwardly and out wardly forming curved spring arms, upon the outer ends of which are formed suitable hooks or clamps for engaging the loop portion of the device afterthe napkin has been inserted. The spring arms and clam s normally stand at some distance from t e loop portion, but after the napkin has been placed on the loop 1portion the arms are bent mwardly over the op with a portion of the hook extending beneath the same, clamping the napkin securely to the holder.

My invention will be morereadily understood by reference to the accom anying drawings forming a part of this spec' cation, and in which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a napkinholder embodying my invention in its preferred form, one of the hooks being in clam ing position, and the other in normal or unfastened position, and Fig. 2 is a planview illustrating the manner of connecting or securing a napkin thereto. l

1 indicates a ring or loop formed of spring wire and of a size and shape to be worn comfortably about the neck. The loop is substantially oval and is open 2 for a considerable distance. The ends of at the back as at r the Wire of which the loop is formed are then bent outwardly and forwardly forming a pair of curved spring arms 3 which normally lie in the plane of the loop 1 and at a considerable distance from the sides thereof. Upon the ends of the arms 3 are formed hooks or clamping members by means of which a napkin is secured in place upon the loop or ring.

To form the clamping members the wire is bent outwardly and then inwardly forming a small loop 4 in the plane of the loop 1 and arms 3, then u wardly and backwardly forming a loop 5 w ich flares outwardly and upwardly at an angle to the loop 4.

To secure a napkin to the holder the corner of the'napkin is placed over the loop as indicated in Fig. 2 with the edge extending beneath the ends of the arms 3. The arms are then bent inwardly until the hook portion 4 passes over and then under the sides of the loop. The resiliency of the arms holds projectin portion 5 serves as means to readily re ease the hook when it is desiredto remove the napkin.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A napkin holder formed of spring wire bent to form a main loop portion open at the back and then bent outwardly and upon itself forming a pair of forwardly and outwardly extending arms in substantially the plane of said main loop portion, and a clamping device on the end of each of said arms, said clampin device each comprising a small outwardly extending loop and a similar upwardly and outwardly extending loop, said loops being formed by bending the wire outwardly at the end of the arm and then. inwardly to form the first said loop and then upwardly, backwardly and downwardly forming the last said loop, substantially as described.
