Be it known that I, JULIUS A. Screen, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvement in a l/Vriting Pen and Stylus, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a writing pen and stylus designed particularly for use in duplicating autographic matter, drawings, music, and the like, though it may be used as an ordinary writingpen where desired; and it consists in certain new and useful features of detail construction and formation, all as hereinafter more fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure l is a plan View of the blank from which my improved pen is formed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the completed pen. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of the pen; and Fig. 5isaview in elevation, showing the position in which the pen is used in marking or writing.
The blank shown in Fig. 1 is preferably formed from sheet metal stamped into proper form, with the shank portion A and head portion A formed integral, as shown in the drawings, and at a point where the shank'and head portion join there is cut into the metal an opening 0,, preferably semicircular in shape. The head portion A is made with swelled base and rounded converging point e, and in manufacturing the finished pen the shank A is bent in one direction, while the head portion A is bent in the opposite direction to form an ink-reservoir, at the same time forming an inflexible-point portion,which may be pressed against the paper with snfficient firmness to accomplish the purpose of this invention. It will be observed that about midway the length of the finished pen the wings b are folded over and overlap the shank portion A, while the point 0 is split and rounded to permit free discharge of ink therefrom, at the same time presenting a smooth writing-point, which is absolutely inflexible in ordinary use to which it is likely to be subjected in carrying out the purpose of its invention. It will be noted that the pen may be used with the reservoir formed by the winged head portion A at the upper'side, or it may be used with the same at the lower side, if desired, in either position giving forth the ink freely and presenting an inflexible writing-point.
The opening a in the blank is of practical utility in forming the completed pen, as it then forms an open port therein through which the ink may pass in case the pen is used with a fountain or reservoir holder, at the same time serving as a great convenience in manipulating the metal of the blank by means of suitable formingdies.
In practice my improved pen and stylus is used as follows: The pen is inserted ina suitable holder, the paper is placed in position with first a lower sheet, (or a series of sheets may be used, if desired,) aEpiece of copying or duplicating carbon is placed in position thereon, and on this is placed the sheet upon which the ink autograph matter is to be produced. It will materially aid in the success of the duplication if the bottom sheet, with its superimposed pile of carbon and additional sheets, is placed upon a sheet of metal, so as to present a smooth and unyielding surface, and the whole be clamped in position by any suitable clamping device to hold the sheets in correct position and prevent shifting when in use.
When the required number of sheets have been properly arranged, the pen may be used as an ordinary writing-pen, and if the carbon paper is reasonably fresh but little additional pressure will be required to make a number 'of duplicates while writing the original matter, though it is desirable that the operator may be able to exert a considerable amount of pressure, if desired, where a number of duplicates may be required.
The peculiar shape of the blank A A permits the formation of a pen which may be used with any ordinary penholder, and the reverse bending of the metal thereof produces an inflexible writing-point, which is peculiarly adapted to making duplicate copies by means of the carbon sheets before referred to, or which may be used as an ordinary writingpen, if desired, .the rounded point passing smoothly over the paper, either side up, and a large quantity of ink may be carried in the reservoir formed as indicated.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a writing-pen, a shank of semi-cylindrical form in cross section, an inflexible writing point and ink reservoir integral therewith bent in the opposite direction, said ink reservoir overlapping the shank for a portion of its length, and being provided with a split and rounded point, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pen comprising a shank semi-cylindrical in cross section and an ink reservoir integral with the shank and bent in the oppoday of April, 1895.
