Description
J. S HALSEY.
PEN HOLDER (No Model.)
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SMITH HALSEY, OF BUENA VISTA, COLORADO.
PEN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,723, dated January 8, 1884,
Application filed November 10, 1883. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN S. HALSEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buena Vista, in the county of Ohaffee and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,- which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forms a part of this specification, and which Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimprovedpen-holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjustable finger-block, partly broken to show the inside spring. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, illustrating a modified construction; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the barrel of the holder, used with the modification shown in Fig. 4..
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to pen-holders provided with finger-blocks for the proper adjustment upon the holder of the fingers in writing; and it consists in the improved construction of an adjustable finger-block, and its combination with a pen-holder, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes a pen-holder, and B the finger-block, which has a longitudinal bore, 0, for the insertion of the holder. The bore 0 has a recess, D, on one side into which is inserted a spring, E, adapted to bear with its bulge against the barrel of the holder, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings.
If desired, the bulge of the spring E may be crimped or serrated, so as to cause it to bind firmly upon the barrel of the holder after it has been slid to its proper position upon the same.
For pemholders having a metallic barrel, as shown at F in Fig. 5, this barrel may be serrated, so as to cause spring Eto bind against it and prevent the block from slipping up or down in using the holder.
The advantage of having the finger-block adjustable, in the manner described, is that it can readily be adjusted to the natural position of the fingers upon the holder, so as to keep the point of the pen used in writing in. its proper position upon the paper. It may be used with advantage in schools for imparting to pupils a correct habit of holding the pen in writing, and will be found of advantage also in warm climates, as the fingers will have a firm hold upon the holder, even if moistened with perspiration.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of the holder, the finger block having the central bore and the springrecess, and the spring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the holder having a serrated barrel, the finger-block having the central bore, and the spring-recess and the spring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SMITH HALSEY.
