5 J. S. BURTON. GABLE ORNAMENT FOR BUILDINGS.

Attorney UNTTED STATES JOHN s. BURTON, on
PAT NT Unmet.
DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
GABLE ORNAMENT FOR BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,517, dated July 9, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. BURTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gable Ornaments for Buildings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to'letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a front view of ornament. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same with strips brought together. Fig. 3 is a fragmental view of top portion of ornament broken away to show joint-piece and slots.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in gable ornaments for buildings, the object being to provide a device of this character which can be readily adjusted to suit the pitch of any particular roof.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
The ornament consists. in two main strips, designated by the letters A A in the accompanying drawings, a joint piece B, which unites said strips at their upper meeting ends, and a transverse extension-strip O, the whole having the general form of the letter A.
In the upper or apex end of each of the strips A is formed a groove or recess a, and these grooves or recesses form the seat for Application filed May 2, 1895. Serial No. 547,862. (No model.)
the joint-piece B. The meeting edges 1) of the two strips are rounded or convexed, as indicated, in order that they may move freely upon each other as the strips are adjusted to a greater or less angle. The walls of the grooves or recesses a, which bear upon the joint-pieces, are similarly rounded.
The extension-brace C has slots 0 on its end portions, which are engaged by studs or projections 01 on inward arms D of the strips A. As the said strips are adjusted, these pins or projections slide in the slots.
E is a shield which is placed over and covers the joints between the strips when they have been properly adjusted.
The strips A A and brace C may be given anydesired form or configuration for purposes ornamental.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adj ustablegable ornament having converging strips A, A, united by a movable joint, and an extension brace connecting said strips,'substantially as specified.
2. An adjustable gable ornament having the converging strips A, A, the joint piece B, seated in grooves or recesses in the meeting ends of said strips, and a transverse brace O connecting said strips and having slots-therein loosely engaged by hearings on the said strips A, A, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN. S." BURTON. Witnesses:
M. J. WOLFORD,
A. L. WEBSTER.
