SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,873, dated May 28, 1895. Application filed July 13, 1 894- Serial No. 517,444. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME JOSEPH LAN DRY,a citizenof the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Coup-' lings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a improvement in a thill coupling, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and the object of my invention is to effect certain improvements in devices of this character.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved thillcoupling complete. Fig. 2is an enlarged perspective detail of the pin-plate and strap assembled. Fig. 3 isa detail of strap removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the forward axle of a vehicle, and B is the clip connected to the axle in any suitable manner, as by a bolt 6.
T is the thill having the usual thill iron 0 provided with an eye 0, which passes between .the sides of the clip B.
E is a threadless pin which passes through holes in the sides of the clip B, and intermediately through the eye 0 as shown in Fig. 1; and the outer end of this pin has a head as usual, while the inner end is preferably pointed as at G, the better to permit its insertion.
D is a plate having three holes through its body, the central one 6 of suitable size and shape to permit the passage of the pin E.
F is a strap preferably of leather having a flat surface f, f showing openings.
In assembling these parts the eye of the thill iron is passed into the clip until its hole registers with those in the clip. The pin E is then inserted through the registering holes from the outside. The strap F is then passed through the uppermost hole (1 of the plate D, and the central hole e of the plate passed over the pointed inner end G of the pin, and
borne against the inner side of the clip, and the body of the strap is then passed through an upright hole H in the pin, and finally through the lowermost hole d of the plate D, so that it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. The plate then acts as a nut at the inner end of the pin, and the strap prevents this plate from coming ofi.
All parts of this device may be of metal, and of the desired size and shapes.
The especial advantages claimed forthe plate and strap over a nut, is that the latter might work loose from the pin,but the former could not. Even if the pin and plate should revolve, so that the strap stands the other end up it will be obvious that it is not liable to be drawn out of position through the holes H, and d.
I am aware that it is not new to connect the thill iron, and clip by a bolt having a nut nor is it new to insert a washer under this nut; but I consider the use of a plate, and strap of the specific construction set forth to be novel, and advantageous as it prevents rattling.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a thill coupling the combination with a clip having horizontal holes, and a thill iron having an eye; of a threadless pinpassing through said holes, and eye, and having, a head at its outer end, and an upright hole through its body near its inner end,'a plate having a central hole and mounted on the inner end of the pin, said plate being provided with additional holes above and below said central hole, and a strap having a flat head at one end, which rests againstthe plate, the body of the strap passing through the holes in the plate and the hole in the pin,
and its end passing through the lower hole in the strap head, as and for the purpose set forth.
