Description

(NoModel G. W.. LA BAW. NAME HOLDER. FOR TRUNKS, VALISES, &c. No. 538,874. I Patented May 7, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. LA BA\V, OF BAYONNE, NElV JERSEY.
NAME-HOLDER FOR TRUNKS, VALISES, 800.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,874, dated May 7, 1 895.
Application filed March 11, 1895. SerialNo. 54:1,273. (Ho model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LA BAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne city, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improve ment in Name-Holders for Trunks, Valises, &c., of which the following is a specification.
Name holders have heretofore been provided, capable of attachment to the surface of the trunk, valise or other article, and provision has been made for slipping the name in between the surface of such trunk and the holder. This is objectionable because there is risk of the holder being torn off the trunk or valise by the careless handling to which the same is exposed, and in addition to this an incorrect name or address can be Slipped in from the outside, especially by any one familiar with the construction of the nameholder.
ing, and such invention consists in a name holderhavinga frame that is setinto an opening in the trunk, Valise or other'similar article and contains a glass which is protected from injury by being at or near the inner surface of the frame, and such glass is advantageously made so that it can be removed from the inside of the frame for cleaning or for the insertion of a new glass in case of injury, and a movable flap is provided behind the glass for holding a card or plate with the name or address closely adjacent to the glass so that the address cannot be disturbed or changed except when the trunk is open.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig'. 2 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
The outer frame A is of suitable size and provided with an inwardly projecting flange adapted to the thickness of the wood, leather or other material composing the trunk, and a frame B is provided preferably made of two parts 2 and 3, the portion 2 being a rectangular plate with a central oblong opening, and the frame 3 corresponding in size and having an-off-set flange adapted to receive the glass 0 between the plate 2 and said off-set flange 3,'and it is advantageous to leave off the offsetflange from the frame 3 at one end so that the glass can be slipped in endwise between the parallel off-set flanges of the frame 3, and such glassis held at one end by the end portion of such frame 3.
Upon the frame B a flap D is hinged at 5, the hinge being of any desired character and placed at the portion of the frame 3 that is closed at the end, and this hinged flap can beswung back for the insertion of a card or plate having the name or address thereupon between such flap and the glass, such name plate or card preferably fitting within the flanged portion of the frame 3, and a suitable catch is provided for holding the hinged flap when it is swung down toward the glass. This is preferably in the form of a projecting latch 6 passing int0-a mortisein the plate 2, andthe spring of the plate forming the hinged flap D will usually be sufficient to allow the latch of the projection 6 to catch within the mortise in the plate 2 when the parts are pressed down together, and the flap can be opened by pressure upon the thumb piece 7 of the flapD adjacent to the latch 6, so that the flap can be opened or closed with facility and the parts are smooth on the inside and sufficiently strong to withstand ordinary use, and the glass is at the bottom of the recess formed by the frame A.
It is preferable to fasten the plates 2 and 3 together by rivets or solder so that they properly hold the glass and the flap, and the frame A is advantageously a separate piece to set into the opening made in the trunk or valise, and rivets or screws are provided as at 8 to connect the frames A and B together through the material of the trunk, thereby holding the parts firmly to the trunk or valise.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a name holder for trunks and similar articles, of the flanged frame A adapted to set around an opening in the trunk or valise, the frame B adapted to set against theinner surface of'the trunk or valise, and means for connecting the frames A and B together and to the trunk or valise, a glass carried by the frame B and adapted to receive behind it the card or plate with the name or address, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a name holder for trunks and similar articles, of a flanged frame A adapted to set around an opening in the lise, and means for connecting the frames A and B together and to the trunk or valise, a glass carried by the frame B, a hinged flap I; behind the glass and adapted to confine the card or name plate, a latch connected with the hinged flap for holding the same in position when closed, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 7th day of March, 1895.
