ROLLER BOOK-SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,391, dated. March 26, 1 895.

Be it known that I, PETER J. PAULY, Sr., of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller Book-Shelves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in roller book-shelves and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shelf. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 0ca;-of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end detail view of the adjusting bar with co-operating latch. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification of the retaining device of the adjusting bar; and Fig. 5 is an inner side view of the same.

The object of my invention is to construct a roller book-shelf or a series of such shelves, each adapted to receive as a rule a single book or volume (or more than one if desirable) each shelf being provided with an adjusting device whereby volumes of variable width or size can all be retained in line with the front of the shelf, that is to say, whereby the projecting ends of the several books will all be in line with each other.

Where diiferent sizes of books are handled and where the depth of the shelves is sufficient to accommodate a book of maximum width or dimensions, in placing smaller books on'the shelf they are apt to be thrust too far back from the front of the shelf, so that it becomes difficult to keep the outer projecting ends of the said books in line with the front of the shelves or the casing in which the same are located. By my improvement each shelf can be adjusted according to the width of the book so that the entire series of books can be kept in line with the front of the shelf casing.

ing of which and through a registering opening of the bar 3 is free to move the adjustable bar 10 the said bar having a right angular terminal retaining arm 11 projecting upwardly on the rear side of the bar 3. The forward end of the bar 10 is provided with a series of openings 12 with each of which is adapted to co-operate a latch 13 pivoted to the front side of the bar 9. When a book is placed on the rollers, the book can be pushed back a distance until the rear end of the book strikes the projecting arm 11. If the book is a small one the bar 10 is adjusted forward so that the rear end of said book will strike the arm 11 preventing said book from being thrust or pushed too far back on the shelf. By this arrangement the shelf can be adjusted so that variable sized books will all be in line with the front of a series of such shelves.

In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a slight modi-' fication wherein an additional retaining transverse bar 14 is secured to the rear end of the bar 10, there being three projecting arms 15 secured .to said bar 145. This latter arrangement is more applicable where narrow books are handled, in which case the bar 14 and the arms -15 will limit the rear ends of such books. It is to be understood that I ,do not limit myself to the precise details of construction here shown, any and all equivalents falling within the. spirit thereof.

Having described my invention, what I claim isv 1. A roller bookshelf comprising a suitable frame for receiving the books, rollers mounted on said frame, transverse bars and plates having registering openings, a sliding bar passing through said openings, a rear upward projecting arm on said bar, suitable openings formed in the forward end of said bar, and a pivoted latch secured to the front side of the transverse bar co-operating with the openings of said sliding bar, substantially as set forth.

2. In a roller book shelf, a sliding bar, a suitable stop carried by the rear end of said bar, a supporting frame for said bar, registering openings formed in said frame for holding the bar, and a latch carried by the front of the frame and cooperating with the sliding, bar along the forward portion thereof for 10 holding said bar in an adjusted position, substantially as set forth.
