Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN.H. TROWBRIDGE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND DANIEL FULLER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOLDERING-IRONS.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, J oHN H. TROWBRIDGE, of New-Haven, in the county of NeuT Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Soldering-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, ln-
Figure l, a side view, and in Fig. 2 a central section.
My invention relates to an improvement in the instrument used for soldering metals, commonly called soldering-irons.7
Heretofore it has been found necessary to make this instrument of solid copper, thereby making the instruments expensive.
The object of my invention is to produce aA soldering-iron equally good and at much less cost; and my invention consists in forming the body of the instrument of any cast metal, as iron, and forming the body so that a point of copper may be cast thereon, requiring but a small quantity of copper to form a point.
Tovenable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the Specijcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,545, dated March 27, 1866.
same as illustrated in the accompanying draw ings.
I first form the shank A from a rod of metal the proper length and size, and cast thereon, in the usual manner, from iron or other cheap metal, a head, B, forming a projection, a, and shoulder upon the lower end ofthe said head, then place the said head in a mold and cast onto the projection a a copper point, C. The form ofthe projection a may be such that the copper cast thereon Would be securely held Without other fastenings or, if preferred, a pin may be placed through the two parts, as seen in Fig. 2. Thus the cost of the instrument Would be reduced in the proportion that the quantity of copper used bears to the quantity which would be required to make the instrument solid of the same size.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as neviT and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A soldering-iron constructed in the manner substantially as herein described, as a new article of manufacture.
JOHN H. TROWBRIDGE.
