T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
` Be it known tha-t I, C. O. CROSBY, of New Haven, in the countyof New Havemand State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Soldering-Iron.; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with thc accompanying drawings and theletters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and
exact description of thesame, andwhich said drawings constitute part of' this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, n. side view.
Figure 2, a vertical central section; and in Figure 3 the manner of construction. y
My invention relates to an improvement inthe construction of soldering-irons, whereby they are very much cheapened and equally as good as the bestcoppersin use, and consists in forming a body from cast iron or other cheap similar metal, and forming the pointby driving into a recess in theend of thc cast metal a piece of copper, and shaping the copper to any desired vform. Irons when made entirely of copper are very expensive, and when it is considered that only the point is used, itwill be evident that the principal portion of metal may be of some cheaper material than the copper, providing the copper can be rmly united to the cheaper.material By my invention this is successfully accomplished.
vTo enable others skilled in the art to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated inl the accompanying drawings.
A is nhe body or heavier portion ofthe iron, to whichiin any convenient manner thelmndle or shank B is attached, and is formed of common cast iron or other like cheap material inany convenient or known manner.
In the lower or point end of' the body A, I form a recess to receive the copper, and for the better security I make this recess increasing in size inward, and in'o the said recess I place a piece of' copperas seen in fig. 3,-
work the point into any desired form, as seen in fig. 2. This is an operation quickly performed, and firmly secures the point to the body oi'4 the iron without the necessary use of further security.
I am awa-re that'soldering-irons have been constructed, having an iron body and copper point, therefore I do not broadly claim such as my'invcntion; but having thus fully described my invention'` what'I do claim ns new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The body A, and point B,'when constructed and united by the enlargement ot'l the point within the body, substantially as herein described.
and hammer it down, which enl'arges that portion of it inthe recess so as to completely fill the recess, and then c. o; cRosn'Y.
