Description

(N0 Model.)
J. H. DE BRUG-E.
GOLTER.
N6..534,204. Patented Feb. 12, 1895.
UNITED ISTATES PATENT FFICEQ Q.OITER.
- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 534,204, datecl February 12, 1895.
' pplicati on filed January 31,1394. Seria.l N0. 498.587. (N0 model.)
thereon, whioh form a parb of this specification.
My inventi0n relates to that particular dass of colters which are adapted for use in con= nection with shovel o1 spade plows; andmy object is to provide means whereby the inclination of the blade or knife can be more conveniently and (effectively adj usted.
T0 thisend my invention consists of a bladeholder provided With improved means for adj usting and locking the blade at any desired inclination, all of which willb'e m0re fully de scribed hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings this coustruction is illustrated in detail, in which- Figure 1, represents a side elevation 0f a plow equipped with my improvements; Fig. 2, a section taken on the line XX of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar view on the line Y-Y of same figure; Fig. 4, a third secti0nal view 011 the line Z-Z of Fig. 1. y
The reference letter a indicates the plowbeam which is preferably reactan gular in cross section and has attached 'to its rea.r ehd the mold-board supporting beam a.
b indicates the mold-board which is, as before explained, of the shovel or spade type. Secured to the beama directly forward of the mold-board is the colter frame c. This consists of a U-sbaped oasting provided on'-one side with the shoulders c which are adapted to bear against the under side of the beam. a, and which serve to assist in rigidly securing the frame in place. From these shoulders the arms of the frame extend upwardly t0 the upper edge of the beam a, and lie flush With its sides, bolts d being provided whereby the device is rigidly secured to the beam a.
F0rmed at the lower extremity of the frame their upper ends With the inwardly extend ing lgs or projections g and g which extend toward each other and parallel with the beam a f01 a distance equal 130 about one-fifth of the distance be tween the two arms. The outer face of the lug g is formed with serrations 01' corrugations thereon, and for a-purpose that Will be seen hereinafter.
Extending across the upper ends of the frame arme, and lying flush with the outer faces of the lugs g and g is the laterally movable block h, which is provided on its inner left' band end with a series of corrugations adapted to mesh with those of thelug g and by these 1neans the two parts may be positively con nected. Arranged in theinner ende of each of the lugs g and g are the bolts h, which project outwardlyfronh the lugs and are adapted to pass through the horizontally elongated slots z formed in each end of the block h, and by means of these bolts the block h may be made tolle flush with the lugs g and g, and owing to the eorresponding serrations on the top parts the block is hold incapable 0f displacemenc.
If it is found necessary both of thelugs and the corresponding ends of the block h may be corrugated, bat; l do nob anticipate the absolute necessity for this. Formed 011 the inner face 0f the block h, and projecting outwardly therefroxn until the beam a is reached are the ribs In and these ribs extend vertically and parallel with each other, thus making a space er inclosure between the block h and the beam a in whichthe upper end of the knifefis adapted'to beseated. The space formed by the ribs k is of necessiby a little larger than the us ual size of the knife, sinde the knife requires a certain degree 0E play within the space when being adjusted. All of this will appear more fully hereinaffier.
T0 adjust the longitudinal disposition of the colter-knife f, all that will be necessary is to looson tl1e bolts h so as to disongage the Serrations 011 the lug g and block h. 'lhis latter device, tl1c block h, is then free to rnove laterally untileithor of the ribs k engage the inner ends of the lngs g and g as oho case ma.y be. 'Ihis engagement will, of conrse, prevent any further movement of tho block h.
The lateral movement of the block h Will be necessitated by a swinging of the knife on its pivot f and by a consequent change in the longitudinal disposition of tho knife. By this means tho proper slant of oho knife may be quickly attained, and by tightening tl1e bolts h this position may be retained as long as desired. It will bo understood that as the knifo fswings 011 its pivot f, its upper end will describe an am, and sinne the line of movement of the block h is truly horizontal it Will be necessary to so enla.rgo the spaoe formed by the 1ibs k as to allow alle said npper ends some degreo of play therein. This enlargoment will, howcver, be baucly percepble, sincc the small movement Whicl1 it Will be necessary to give to tl1e knife will be attended only by a very small arc.
N0 furthcr description of the principle ancl function of tho invention is here necessary since the use and pnrposc of such devices are well understood. Therefore, it will only be necessary to add. that I have stated the invention to be especinlly applicable to spa.de 01 shovel plows and for this dass of plows it was primarily designed. However, it Will bc roadily seen t-l1at it is applicable, and may be nsed 011 any otherstyle of plow.
Having thns described thc invention, w l1at I claim as new, and desire to seoure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an open frame adapted to be bolted to the sicle of tho plow beaxn, and extending below the latter, and
having an oye in its 10We'r portion, a. knife passing through thc eye and sccured therein by a. transverse bolt which servos as a pivot when adjusting the inclination cf the knife, a sliding block provided Witl1 a recess th1ough whicl1 the knifo passes, said block having oblong recesses, bolts passing through the recesses, ancl set-nuts 011 the bolts whcreby tl1e block can be adj usted and locked for the purpose set forth.
2. In acolter, tl1e combination with an 0 peu frame adapted to be attached to the sidc of a plow beeun, and projecting below the latter, the lowcr portion being provided witl1 an eye, a straight knifc pnssing through the eyo, a holt extending through the knife and eyo ancl forming a pivot 'for tl1e knife, a, block, provided with oblong slots and embracing the upper end of tl1e knife and engagingtheouter face of the frame and bolts passing throngh tl1o block and frame and provided with sot nnts, as and for the purposc specified.
3. In a colter, the combina.tion with an opcn U.shaped frame adapted to be attached to the sidc of a plow biaam, and providecl with an eye in its lower portion, a straight knife passing throngh the eye, and secnred therein by a holt which serves as a pivot in tho adjnsting Operation, a movable block embracing the upper end of thc knife, and cngaging tho frame, said block boing providod with oblong slots, bolts passing through tl1o slots, an(l Set nnts upon the bolts, all arranged and adapted to operate in the warmer and for the purpose set forth.
In tostimony wl1ereof I affix n1y signatu're in prescnce of two witncsses.
JOHN H. DE BRUCE.
