Description

W. M. TQWERS.
' PLOW-FEET.
Patented T-une 13, 1876.
NrrEn rSTArrEs PATENT OFFICE.
vWILLIAM M. TOWERS, OF ROME, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-FEET.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,815, dated J une 13, 1876; application filed April 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. TOWERS, of Rome, in the county of Floyd, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Feet; and
' ter of said beam, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section upon line 00 as of Fig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each 'of the figures.
The design of my invention is to increase the ease with which the inclination of a plowfoot may be changed and the vertical position of the shovel varied; to which end it consists, principally, in the means employed for connecting the foot with, and rendering the same adjustable upon, the beam, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in the means employed for connecting the shovel to or with the foot, and for insuring the vertical adjustability of the former with relation to the latter, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. In the annexed drawings, A represents a plow-foot, which, in side elevation, has sub stantially the form of a right angle, and, at its upper end, is forked, so as to permit such portion to embrace the sides of a beam, B. A bolt, 0, passing horizontally through the forked portion of said foot, near its longitudinal center, and through said beam, connects said parts together, and acts'as a pivotal bearing for and upon which the former moves in 7 a vertical plane. The front ends A and A" of the forked upper portion of the foot A are which are provided upon each side of the slot a of each front end A of the foot, while upon the opposite threaded end of said bolt is placed a nut, D, and between the same and the grooved face of the contiguous end A is placed a washer, d, that has its inner face grooved to correspond to that of said bolthead 21. As thus constructed, it will be seen that when the grooved bearing-surfaces of the bolt D, washer d, and foot ends A and A are brought into contact, but slight pressure of the nut D will be required to prevent the latter from moving vertically, while to free said parts A and A, so as to permit the angle of the foot A to be changed, it is only requisite that said nut should be turned outward to a distance equal to twice the depth of the corrugations. The lower portion of the foot A is provided with a longitudinal slot, a, which extends from front to rear, and upon the forward side of said foot, upon each side of said slot, is provided a series of horizontal parallel V-shaped grooves, a, c, and a, similar to those before described. Within the slot a are placed two bolts, the lower of which, E,
is of usual construction, and operates to confine a shovel, F, upon the forward face-of the foot A,'while the upper bolt G has the inner face of its head 9 grooved to correspond with the grooves a and a of said foot, and, within the lower side at the inner edge of said head, is provided with a right-angled rabbet, g, which receives and contains the upper end of said'shovel.
It will be seen that the bolt E serves to ing its nut G inward with much firmness, and
that the engagement of said head g with said. shovel F enables the latter to be removed, when desired, without the removal of said bolt Gr.- The manipulation of the bolts E and G necessary in order to permit of a change of the vertical position of theshovel F is obvious, and does not require explanation.
Having thus fully set forth the nature. and merits of m yin vention, what Iclaim as new is 1. In combination with the plow-foot A, having a forked upper portion pivoted to or upon the beam B, and at each end A of said forked portion provided with a slot, at, and a grooved outerface, the bolt D, passing through said slots and saidbeam, and havingthe inner face of its head d grooved, the washer d", provided upon its inner face with grooves, and the nut D, placed over the threaded end of said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination withtthe shovel F and withthe foot A, provided with the vertical slot a and horizontal grooves a, the bolt G, passing through said slot and provided with a head, 9, that is grooved to engage with the front of said foot, and is provided with a rabbet, 9, which embraces the upper end of said shovel, substantially as and tor the purpose shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day -of April, 1876.
