COTTON-SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,875, dated December 13, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE LAFAYETTE MUCKLEROY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nacogdoches, in the county of Nacogdoches and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Scraper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a cotton-scraper which can be applied to a shovel or other plow generally employed for cultivating cotton and which will admit of the scraper-blade being susceptible of a variety of adjustments vertically, laterally, and angularly with respect to the line of motion thereby adapting the attachment to the condition and nature of the soil, so as to secure the best results possible.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow, showing the attachment in posit-ion. Fig. 2 is a'top plan view of the scraper-blade, parts being broken away, showing the standard,

the wedge, and the washer in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lower rear portion of the standard. Fig. i is a detail view ofthe wedge.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The plow 1 is of ordinary construction, such as generally employed for cultivating cotton.

The standard or beam 2, bearing the scraperblade 3 at its lower rear end, has adjustable connection with the plow-beam,its front end being expanded and provided with a vertical series of openings 4 to receive the fasteningbolt, by means of which the standard or beam 2 is secured in an adjusted position when turned upon the bolt 5. The portion of the standard or beam in the rear of the bolt 5/ is deflected away from the plow beam at an angle, so as to cause the end portions of the scraper-blade to project upon opposite sides of a plane passing vertically through the plow-beam. The lower rear end of the standard or beam 2 is given a partial twist and has a vertical slot 6, in which is adj ustable vertically the bolt 7, by means of which the scraper-blade 3 is held in place.

The scraper-blade is of rhomboidal form, with-an approximately flat body, and has a longitudinal slot 8 near its upper edge, through which passes the bolt 7, thereby. providing for the lateral adjustment of the blade, and the inner or forward end of the blade is curved or deflected forwardly, so as to engage with the weeds, grass, soil, and other matter and deflect the same away from the plants toward the middle of the space between the rows. A fiat-faced wedge 9 is mounted upon the bolt 7 so as to turn thereon to vary the pitch and angular adjustment of the blade with reference to the line of motion. A washer 10 is placed upon the rear end of the bolt 7 and is confined between the rear'end of the standard 2 and the nut 11.

The attachment is secured to the plow-beam by a bolt 5, uponwhich the standard or beam 2 is adapted to turn, and is held in an adj usted position by a bolt 12 passing through one of the series of openings 4 and a corresponding opening in the plow-beam. The scraper-blade can be adjusted vertically by moving the bolt 7 in the slot 6 and laterally by shifting the blade to one side or the other, the slot 8 providing for such adjustment.

The pitch of the blade and its angular adj ustmentwith reference to the line of motion can be regulated by moving the wedge 9 into the desired position.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a cotton-scraper, the combination with a plow-carrying beam, of a scraper-standard fitted to the beam in advance of the plow and provided in its lower end portion with a longitudinally-disposed slot, an obliquely-ar ranged scraper blade having an approximately flat body and provided therein with a longitudinally-disposed slot crossing that in the standard, a bolt passing through the intersecting slots of the blade and standard and permitting the blade to have an axial, verti- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
