Louisiana, have invented a new and usefulA Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject-matter of the present invention isan' attachment to be applied to a plow orcultivator especially de-f signed for cultivating corn and cotton after it has attained a desired growth, the purpose being toprevent injury to the young plants by the` plowed soilrolling thereon.`
The attachment consists of a blade of peculiar formation and attaching means for adjustably connecting the blade with the standy ard or footbearing the cultivator-shovelor plow-point in such a manner as toadmitof the bladey being raised or lowered or shifted from one side to the -other or to an interme?" diate point of the cultivator-shovel, as de? sired.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of .various changesinthe vform,'proportion, and the ,minor details of-y construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing anyofjthe advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof'is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a foot or standard of ordinary construction bearing a cultivator-shovel and showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 isa top plan view showing the foot or standard in transverse section.y Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attachment.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated inall the views of thev drawings by the same reference' characters. n'
The foot or standard l may be of any desired construction, and is provided with a plow-point or cultivator-shovel 2 of desired make, and' is illustrated simply to vshow the relation and application of the invention.
The attachment consists of va clamp 3 and a blade 4, the latter tapering to a point atits gsmi N6." 644,412. oro model.)
lower.' end and being sufficiently wide at its uppelifend to turn the soil and prevent it crowdingthe plants when' the plow or cultivator is drawn over the iield. The rear edge lof theblazde 4: is straight and occupies an apr'proximately vertical position when the device gisvin'place, and the front edge of the blade is ,sharpened and curves from the point to the upper end. A flattened tang 5 is provided at the' upper rear corner of the blade and is apertured to receive a fastening-bolt 6, by means ofwhich the blade is adjustably connected with "the clamp 3. By loosening the bolt 6 ,the bladevmay be turned thereon to any required angular adjustment to throw the earth as may be desired, and after the blade has been properly positioned it is fixed by retight- "ening the said bolt.
The clamp 3 comprises a front plate 7, hav- ,ingla longitudinal slot 8, a rear plate 9, lon- ,jgitudinall lotted, and a clamp-bolt 10, the latter pasilnlghrough the longitudinal slots of the front and rear plates and through the space and slot formed in the foot or standard. The front plate 7 is longer than the rear plate, so as to project from one side of the foot or standard a proper distance to receive the bolt `6, by means of whichthe blade is adjustably connected therewith. The end portions of the front and rear clamp-plates overlap the front and rear edges of the parts of the foot or standard bordering upon the slot or space formed between them and are caused to bind upon said edges by tightening the clamp-bolt 10. Upon loosening the clamp-bolt the clamp and the blade applied thereto can be adjusted vvertically to turn more or less of the earth aside, as required, and according to the size of the plant being cultivated.
The attachment can be used upon one side or the other of the shovel or plow-point by shifting the front plate 7 laterally and changing' the blade from one side to the other, as will be readily understood. If it be required to'locate the blade at a point intermediate of the' edges of the shovel or plow-point, its tang can be applied to the clamp-bolt, the latter lserving in this adjustment of the device to secure the blade and clamp at the required place.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is* v IOO l. In combination with a standard or foot provided with a shovel, a clamp having vertical and lateral adjustable connection with the standard, a vertical blade, and means for adj ustably connecting the blade with the clamp, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a standard or foot bearing a shovel, a clamp having vertical and lat-eral adjustable connection with the standard, a vertical blade tapering from its upper to its lower end and having its front edge sharpened, and means for adj ustably connecting the blade with the clamp, substantially as set forth.
3. An attachment for plows and cultivators, comprising a clamp having a longitudinally-slotted plate, a blade having a tang at its upper end, and a bolt passing through an opening in the tang and through the aforesaid slotted plate and adapted to secure the blade in an adjusted position, substantially as set forth.
4. An attachment for the purpose set forth, comprising front and rear longitudinally slotted plates, a clamp-bolt passing through the slots of the said plates, a blade, and means for adjustably connecting the blade Wit-h one of the aforesaid slotted plates, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EUGENE WHITMAN.
