To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN C. F. E. SNOW- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Paltz, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to mailing envelopes; and it relates particularly to thespecific arrangement of an envelope, whereby ,when sealed tampering therewith may be readily detected. j

The principal object of my invention is to provide'a simple, inexpensiveand effective envelope adapted to contain registered or other mail matter having an aniline colored or coated slip or tag interposed between the sealed fiap and the complemental sealing flap of the mail parcel and so arranged as that in the event of steaming, moistening or tampering therewith for the purpose of unwarrantedly opening the letter or parcel, the same may be rea'dily detected.

Interposed between the bottom sealed Hap c, and the top sealing flap d, is an aniline colored or coated tag or slip E, of tissue paper or other material forming what I term Serial No.. l98,553. (No modeL) the detector and distributor of my invention, whereby when the respective iaps of the envelope are sealed with mail matter therein, tampering or any attempt to abstract matter in the same, by steaming or otherwise loosening the sealed or sealing flaps of the envelope can be readily detected, through distribution of the aniline color or coating of the detector over the surfaces of the envelope and into the pores of the materialof the envelope, but, however, without coming in contact with the mail matter contained therein.

It may be here remarked that the color of the detector is indelibly stamped or impressed into the envelope, and thus is presented a safe and entirely reliable parcel for the carriage of mail matter. This detector and distributor E, as hereinbefore explained, has a hexagonal body e, with four inclined arms e5 and e, which extends from the body e, and respectively engage with the side iap b and b', and with the under surface of the sealing and sealed perforated iaps c and d, of the envelope, as illustrated, so as torender it possible to detect at a glance Whether any tampering by the application of steam or any other meansphas been had-with the envelope to abstract the contents of the envelope. Having thus described the nature and ob jects'of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An envelope provided with imperforate side flaps, a bottom cone-shaped sealed Hap with perforations arranged adjacent to the upper edges thereof and at the apex portion of the same is provided a cluster of perforations, a complemental cone-shaped sealing flap with perforations arranged adjacent to the lower edges and with a cluster of perforations in the apex portion thereof, a hexagonal shaped aniline coated or colored detector and distributer interposed between the perforated sealing and sealed iaps and engaging the imperforate side flaps and provided with inclined coated or colored arms, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
